Hey Guys,

I've got a quickie. Until the Utah HTF Shoot, I had no idea that Open carry was legal in Utah. I've got my CFP, and would love to OC. However, I just can't do it without reading the laws on the issue. Can someone direct me to or quote the law, as well as the requirements for CFP OC?

Thanks guys!

I'd also try talking to whoever did your classroom time for your permit, they should have covered that.

yea open carry is good to go. Just making sure you know the laws inside and out. You can get harrassed by the police over it.

I open carry about 50% of the time and have not been harassed but there are quite a few that broke the ice before me.

We open carried at the state capitol when they had the "Take Back Utah" rally a few weeks ago.  We got a few looks from the police but there were no issues.  Quite a few people came up to my wife and I to tell us how they liked the fact that we were carrying and whether or not we had permits to do so.  In Utah, you do not need to have a permit to open carry but there are a few limitations that go away when you do have a permit.

This post is a great place to get a pamphlet for a summary of legal requirements.

Basically you can OC unloaded anywhere it is legal to posess a gun.  OC loaded requires a CFP.  I like to OC when I vote!!

The empty magwell thing is generally considered one of the two mechanical functions needed to bring the gun into play if you lack a carry permit but still want to oc.

So that would mean you would have to insert the mag, and then chamber a round.

I've never heard that before... that would make THREE actions.

insert mag.

rack slide.

pull trigger.

Two actions would be:

Loaded Magazine in magwell.  Chamber Empty

Rack Slide (action #1)

Pull Trigger (action #2)

Utah definition of unloaded is clear chamber and loaded mag for auto pistol, for revolver you need to have the chamber that lines up with the bore empty, and the next one in line empty.

With no CC permit you can open carry with an empty chamber and a loaded mag.

Nope, I'm late.    There are lots of good links and resources posted here already.

I will however, add a link to the L.A. Times article that my wife and I were featrured in about open carry.

All Utah requires is two actions for legal OC without CCW.

Semi-auto:

Pull slide.
Pull trigger.

Revolver:

Nothing under hammer.
Next tube is empty.

Unless of course you have your  CCW, where you can legally OC locked and loaded.

My mistake, I had thought trigger pull didn't count.

No worries. I'm sure you could throw a manual safety in there if there was any doubt.
