Has anyone gone the Utah concealed license route as a Texas resident?
I have a Texas license that is up for renewal soon, and heard their (people putting the Utah classes on) "speal" at a gunshow. What is the good and bad of doing this (outside of the fees and requirements?) |

A non-resident license is not recognized by as many states. (6 fewer states vs. a TX RESIDENT CHL)
You will not get the updates in the TX laws that have occurred in the past 5 years. The renewal course is 4 hours and half the price of the initial. The wait times are not NEARLY what they were a year ago and if you renew early enough you wont have any lapse in your CHL. Non-resident CHL/CCW is not good for a gun purchase, meaning you will have to complete all paperwork and WAIT for the NICS check to come back. With resident CHL fill out form 4473, pay and leave with new gun. ymmv |
| Our UT class was run at same time as TX class with no loss of learning during the experience so some of the argued disadvantages can be avoided. . MUCH lower price and fees for legal 24 X 7 permit for CC with (to me) very minor disadvantage at time of infrequent purchases. |

For a renewal, stick with TX... if it were your first time I'd say go for another state. I was a poor college kid, so I went the cheap route.
I carry on a UT, FL combo. Utah class was basic safety, loading / unloading, and how to carry on your person. $65 ish dollars. Florida took my Texas hunter safety course certificate from back when I was 17, and $117 and sent me a license... it does not get any easier than that. This combo covers everywhere that I want to go, and is still cheaper than a TX once you include classes and BS. YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT UPON YOURSELF TO KNOW, AND STAY UPDATED, ON THE LAW IN TX IF YOU DO IT THIS WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I start making some good money, and I feel like killing a whole saturday, I might get a TX CHL. |

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for. I'm just going to renew my Texas license and hope the process get easier each time.
As far as the laws, I guess I have gotten updates each time I have renewed in Texas (I have already done it twice). Other than that, I do not get updates unless I see them on the news. All I know, is that there are places NOT to take my gun, and iF I ever have to pull it I won't be thinking about the law because my life is seriously on the line. I have not even come close in my many years of carry, mainly because I stay away from trouble. I realize, it is when you least expect it, trouble may find you. This was the show stopper for me: "Non-resident CHL/CCW is not good for a gun purchase, meaning you will have to complete all paperwork and WAIT for the NICS check to come back. With resident CHL fill out form 4473, pay and leave with new gun." ymmv Thanks for all the replies and information. |
