I was just approved for my CCW.  I recieved the notarized copy of the decision dated yesterday.

Now I have to wait 2 weeks to pick it up.  WTF?

Tell me why oh learned ones.

I don't think so.  Every county is a little different.  In Fairfax they send you the notification that you have been approved, with a date at the bottom.  You just can't pick up your permit before that date.  They must give a decision before 45 days, but you don't have to wait the 45 if they approve it before your 45 is up.

It is definitely different between counties. The first permit I got was when I lived in an adjacent county. I had to go before the judge to pick my permit up. It was also only good for two years at the time. After I moved, I had to go and submit the renewal form at about the same time. About 3 days later I had my new permit in the mail. They make things much easier out here in the sticks.

I forgot to say I'm in Fairfax.

So FFX notifies you within 45 days and stalls you for 2 more weeks???

Isn't that a passive agressive ploy on their part?

I first got a CCW not long after the law was passed.  I lived in FFX Co. at the time.  Yes, you are right.

Also, I am not sure if they still do it or not, but the local paper used to publish names and addresses of CCW holders once it was approved.  Someone broke into my car not long after my name was published in the paper.  Interestingly enough, nothing was taken out of it.  I am vigilant about always locking my doors, usually doublecheck that.  The doors were unlocked, the few things inside were in disarray, and one side of the back seat was folded down.  Forewarned is forearmed!

Edited to add:
I live in PWC now.  I had no problem changing my name, though I had to pick that up in person.  After the paperwork drill, I received the renewal in the mail.  I don't know how FFX is for renewals.

That FishWrap "The Connection" newspaper has ceased publishing names, after the threat of multiple lawsuits.

That's why I didn't get my CCW years ago...

What Pricks!

IM not sure what two weeks you are talking about.  They will send you the notice with the approval date on it.  Are you saying that this date is not for two weeks after they sent you the letter?

Once you get the letter you should be able to pick up your permit.

That's my point...They sent the letter on the 7th which say I'm approved and can pick up my permit on the 21st!!! and not a minute before!

Spotsy had my permit in 5 days. sent me a letter on Friday to pick up at my convenience after I dropped of paperworrk on monday.

It may not actually be processed completely.  It seems weird as I don't recall getting this run around with mine -- issued 1/16/2002.  So YMMV......however they might just be letting you know that it will be ready so you can make plans to pick it up immediately.

My letter told me, "It's ready, go pick it up at ......"

Ed - {PS: I'm in Fairfax County too.}

Ed,

The form is signed off on by the Court Clerk, the PO who checked my record and the Judge so it's good to go unless I F**k up in the next 2 weeks...after 50 years of being a good guy!

Attached to the forms is a blue sheet that says see highlighted info on the form for the pickup date and notifies me that no exception will be made to an early pickup.  a very passive-agressive notification if ya ask me.

It's as if they'd LOVE NOT TO GIVE TO ME but since they have to they'll just piddle on my parade.

What was the number of elapsed BUSINESS days from submittal to notice?  IIRC Fairfax will make you wait the full 45 days on every application whether or not it goes through faster or not, they'll just use their full 45 as the state prescibes in the legislation.  I know mine was 46 days as I could not get there on the 45th day when it was "ready".

I go to Gilbert's for the $15 FFL transfers.  $120 for 9 month membership is a bit steep.

I ponied up for an annual membership to the NRA range.  NRA range allows rifles and allows drawing and firing, rapid fire, etc.

In Portsmouth they told me to call back in 30 days,I did, permit was ready and I went and got it right then. I read in the newspaper several years ago that there were only about 550 permits in Portsmouth, which is only around 50 more than before the "shall issue" law was passed. I would guess there's another 500 or so handguns being carried by the underage/felons or soon to be robbers.

Got ya, that sucks.  They did not issue my permit until the 44th day anyway so I couple pick it up as soon as I got the notice.

Lots of people buying handguns, ammo and looking for home -D shotguns today.

With the three day wait in Fairfax, I'll be doing a ton of handgun transfers tomorrow at work.  Just about everyone who buys a handgun from Friday until Monday picks it up on Thurs.  Fun fun for me.

Sucks you have to wait on your permit, but it will make it all that much better when you can actually go and pick it up.

You guys know when you are stopped for a traffic ticket your permit comes up with the car and or your lic. on the computer when he runs the tags

You will notice the change in the way you are treated and it is not pleasant

It seems that the answer is yes. Everytime I get pulled over, the officer asks me if I'm armed, and asks in such a way that I can tell he knows I have a CCW.
I always answer NO SIR, even if I am armed. This is probably a bad practice, but why make things take longer than they need to? Having a CCW isn't probable cause for search, so I don't worry about it. The answer is always NO SIR.

I don't know what they would do if I said yes...probably disarm me "for their safety."
Well what about my saftey? They are armed, what makes them less of a danger to me than I am to them? Like I said...the answer is always NO SIR.

All our cars are in my wife's name...and her last name is different then mine.

If stopped and asked I might just say yes, keeping my hands in plain sight---Just to see what happens.

Has anyone here been hassled???

I have never even been asked when stopped or at a road check. I guess the LEO's down in this region are a little more gun friendly.

Here is how I found out that they have the CCW info close at hand.  I was pulled over for having a dead inspection sticker about three weeks after 9/11/01.  The State Trooper came back to my car after taking my registration.  He informed me that he knew I had a license and wanted to know if I was armed.  I answered in the affirmative.  He then asked if it was registered.

"Registered sir?  Well, no.  They don't need to be registered in VA."  I wasn't a smart ass about it but the question really baffled me.  He then asked, "you know, did you buy it in a store?"  "Let me think... yes, I did buy this one in a store."  "May I see it?"

At this point, I was a bit concerned but also knew cops were a bit edgy after 9/11 and complied after asking "why" as politely as possible.  I was told he wanted to ensure it was not stolen.  I found that insane but allowed him to do it.

He came back a few minutes later and handed the gun, ammo and holster back to me.  He did give me a ticket for the inspection sticker.

WOW thats bullshit. I am a helpful guy and I like to make things go as some as smooth as possible. I dont know if I would let him check it for being stolen . I may have tried to work a deal drop the ticket and I will let you check

Man, I really hate FFX County.  I suggest you folks keep a tape recorder in your vehicles.  Just in case.

Chim,

Since I'm originally from NYC just getting a CCW (and a C&R) is amazing to me.  You should have seen my face when the UPS guy delivered my 1st E German Makarov!

As for the CCW I was allowed to pick it up on the 45th business day after I submitted the paperwork to the court. And as a form later stated "NOT BEFORE FOR ANY REASON"...

Regards,
ww

Prince William county is pretty easy.  I just got mine renewed.  There was a 5 minute wait at the police station, no wait at the court and my permit was in my mailbox 2 weeks later.

u-baddog, I didn't know what to do.  It is one thing to say how you will react but another when it actually happens to you.  I thought carefully about denying him the right to check it.  Remember, this was in October of 2001 and they were still pretty edgy after 9/11.  I have no idea why checking the status of a gun from a guy with a legal permit helped him, but maybe that had something to do with it.

There were a couple of other odd things about this encounter.  First, I handed over my Kimber .45 but not the Seecamp that I also had.  I figured he wouldn't be able to figure out how to unload the Seecamp.

Finally, after this happened, I got to thinking about proper gun handling in this instance.  We all know you should never hand a loaded gun to anybody.  However, I'm sure the police would not want you handling the gun andy more than is required to hand it to them.  I handed it in its holster and it was returned with the magazine out and the bullet from the chamber was handed to me.  If this ever happens again, and I decide to consent to the check, I'll ask the cop how to handle that situation.

mine expired in november so around the middle of october i drop off my renewal application.  As has been my experience in the past on day 45 they dropped my "come and get it" notice in the mail which i got about a week later. By the time i got it i could have gone in that day to pick it up.  I've never had to wait more than a couple of days to pick it up after receiving the notice.  Anyway i gapped for about 2 weeks, talk about feeling naked!

My wife used to be the clerk for one of the FFX judges that approve CCWs.

The 45-day policy is SOP in FFX co. I discussed the policy with my wife. (she's an attorney, as all clerks are - it's not the same as being the Clerk of Court or working in that dept) I argued that the arbitrary 45 day policy was tantamount to a 45 day wating period. (You might get approved in 3 weeks, but you'll have to wait until the 45 days has expired.) It was not the intention of the legislature to impose this waiting period - as you all know, the 45 days is intended to "force" municipalities to issue the CCW in a reasonable amount of time.

My wife agreed that the policy is ripe for a lawsuit, unfortunately you'd have to show actual damages to bring suit- ie: you get shot between the time they actually approve the CCW and 45 day expires, and you can demonstrate that you suffered these damages b/c of the policy.

As a former lifelong resident of NYC I'm tickled pink that I even got a CCW-Hell if I hadn't moved here I'd still be unarmed in a city where the bad guys have all the Glocks!

Is the CCW database available only for state troopers or for county officers as well?

I have been pulled over by Arlington County and Fairfax county officers on 2 separate occasions and they did not ask at all.

DD - all LEO's will have access to your DMV record when calling in your plate.  The information returned will include a CCW if the owner(s) of the vehicle have one.  Personally, I LIKE this (and I'm usually very privacy-focused).  I have not been treated badly for having a CCW - actually exactly the opposite.  Private CCW holders are the most law-abiding group of people in the U.S. (even moreso than LEOs).  I think that makes us the "card carrying good guys."

As far as demand picking up for CCW's and firearm purchases singe 9/11 (specifically condition orange a few weeks ago) - YES!!  I teach NRA courses in central Virginia that meet Va's education requirement for a CCW.  95+% of my students take the class so they can get their CCW.  Usually I have ~6 people a class.  Now I have 2x that and am booked 3 months out.  They have all expressed they're worried about the times and that has prompted them to get a CCW.  I love it.

Thanks Blackfox. That's ok with me too, and yeah, i drive even more carefully when i'm carrying-which was good for me several years ago BTW,  because initially, as you remember, our VA's CCW where only a 2 year deal and, right about the time when i was up for renewal - a lot of stuff was going on personlly(divorce among other things) and i totally forgot about it being up. Months later, i was just looking at my wallet's contents and i noticed that i was 9 months expired!!!!!Needless to say - i now know exactly when i am up for renewal!!
