I thought Lock Stock & Barrle was the only reason to visit Valentine.  I visited there once and they had a full gunstore in the front of the shop.  Thought I saw a couple of ARs, but I don't know about parts.  You could always try calling them and asking.

If you are an Illinois resident they can not sell you any firearms that can not be sold to you in Illinois

Haven't been to Valentine in several years, if you are visiting there and anticipate the need for parts I believe you will be mostly likely S.O.L.    Ammo can be had almost anywhere.

Beautiful country, course I grew up in the Sandhills so I may not be the one to have an objective viewpoint.  They have been getting more rain this year so it should be greener than the past couple years.  I'll see this July when I load up the weapons and spend 3 days burning ammo

There are many things to do and see, they aren't as publicized as other "tourist" friendly places.   Many people go crazy cause there isn't the more urbanized america ammenities, but that is fine by me.   Its more simpe, laid back and easy going.

The lack of urbanization is the big apeal for me. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and now live in Metro Phoenix......Seriously hoping to be able to move or at least buy some property there in the next year or two.
Big thing for me is how are the shooting sports? I like IPSC, IDPA, 3 gun, etc

For those you will have to travel; David could probably answer that better than I could (I don't compete).   The local gun clubs would have trap shooting, maybe some long range rifle shooting (they love their coyote rifles).

North Platte, NE will get you IPSC and Action Cowboy, but figure one match a month not the 5 matches a week you are used to in phoenix.

Update:
Restaurants - Peppermill Grill (lunch ok, dinner don't order french fried shrimp), Jordans (?) and Bunkhouse (hamburgers ok)
Motel - Comfort Inn ($60/night with free continental breakfast)
Lock Stock and Barrell - limited quantities/selection of Hornady ammo (sells tribal hunting licenses)
