I will be visiting Illinois (Normal) next month to see my little mobsters(kids). I want to know this. Can I purchase ammo? I am from AZ and will ship it home. I know about the FOID card for firarms, but ammo?? What can I or cant I do regarding ammo.

Long live the great free state of Arizona!

Well, here in the Socialist Republic of Daley and formerly Blagojevich, you may only purchase ammo if you have a valid FOID card and are 18+ for rifle ammo and 21+ for handgun ammo. You may purchase ammo for hunting if you have a valid IL hunting license. That said, someone unknowledgeable may sell you ammo with your out of state DL.
Actually, ammo prices are probably cheaper in AZ, assuming what you want is in stock.

The FOID only applies to Illinois residents.  You can purchase ammo by showing your out of state driver's license or ID.  I would not expect places like Walmart to know that so you may be turned away.

This, I was in Bass Pro shops today and bought some ammo as chance would have it, they asked for my FOID or out-of-state drivers license.

If you're going to go to walmart, you can try printing the law out and bringing it with you if they give you a hassle.

Technically speaking, Federal law says you can only purchase handguns and handgun ammunition within your own state of residence, Long guns and long gun ammunition can only be purchased from a connecting state, the only exception being if you have a hunting license or are law enforcement etc.

That being said, you may easily find a box store that doesn't follow this law if you simply show them an out of state drivers license.

Walmart in Normal has a list posted on their ammo case of which out of state residents are allowed to buy ammo in IL.

Good luck finding the ammo you want in Normal.

Walmart is usually picked pretty clean, try Farm and Fleet in Bloomington if you've got some extra time, sometimes they'll have ammo when the walmarts don't.

I just graduated from Illinois State this May after being down there for 2 years. Ammo was pretty hit and miss. Walmart get a case of something in, and it'd be gone in a day or two.

I've found more than once that Smiley's (Ireland Grove Rd in Bloomington, just off Verterans) was most likely buying it all and marking it up to absolutely stupid prices. Wal-mart would get a bunch of 9mm in for $19.99 pr 100rds and it would all disappear and reappear at Smiley's for $34.99. They can pound sand.

Well I will be in Normal late Sept or early Oct. Oddly enough the Walmart there has had .22 every time my son goes there. .22 value packs NO NOT exist out here anywhere. Sooooooooo, I plan to try and get some while there and shipping it back where it can live free of oppression! Oh course they will be out when I am there!!

The sucky part about visiting is I will be unarmed. This will be the frist time, other then flying I have been un armed in 3 years! I have my CCW, open carry from time to time. or the 2-3 loaded guns in the car!

Thanks for the input

They showed an Arizona demonstration today on the 4pm ABC7 news and a guy had a pistol on his belt and an AR over is shoulder.  When asked why he was carrying a rifle, he said open carry is allowed in Arizona.

Absolutely beautiful..
