My daughter & son-in-law are moving to Milwaukee and the wife and I are going to be visiting by car next week. The wife is going to drive back home with my daugher while her family transitions. So, I will be on my own on my way home and am curious if there are any gun shops or other spots I should visit while in the area. We are coming up through Chicago and I'd like to check out a Cabelas store or similar if one is located in the area. My only other visit to WI was a brief visit in the Lake Geneva area years ago.
Any advice? |

The Cabela's store is easy to get to from Milwaukee. It's about 45 minutes out from down town. They have a really impressive taxidermy display that you'll probably want to look over for a while. What's up with the daughter and son in law moving here? Son in law's job. |

| Yep, Cabelas in Richfield is easy to get to. Just keep north on 41/45 and you can't miss it. Also check out the Gander Mountain in Germantown (just a few miles south of Cabelas), i've gotten some insane deals on used guns there. Every so often they have things priced 'wrong' (Citori for $600, Sig P220 for $300, Sig P6 for $320) |

Not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

I think it depends on where you're from. If you're used to the Dallas Ft. Worth or Atlanta area etc. even the "far away stuff" in the extended Milwaukee metro area is a breeze. If you're used to a smaller rural or semi-rural town, then the Cabela's is kind of a haul. And the Bass Pro in Gurnee just over the IL border better than a Cabela's? If you're looking for a pair of shoes... maybe. Last time I was there I guess I missed the "Gun library", the freshwater mega-aquarium, and taxidermy display that Bass Pro also has.

Stop in Gurnee Mills and check out the Bass Pro Shop, far better than Cabelas in my opinion. Except for the ridiculous Lake County sales tax. I love the aquarium at Bass Pro, but as far as the store goes, I think Cabela's is much better. Friendlier and more well-laid out gun section. Tons of used rifles and shotguns are on the floor for you to check out without bugging the sales staff. It's not a gun / outdoor shop, but if you love coffee, check out Alterra On the Lake or Foundary: http://alterracoffee.com/InCafes/AlterraattheLake.aspx |
