I'm visiting VA, in Fairfax. Is there a shop nearby that has some nice selection to check out? Do they have rentals too?

I can't help you too much with Northern Virginia. However, I can recommend Quantico Arms in Woodbridge and Quantico.  I did a quick Mapquest.com search and see that Woodbridge is only about 15 miles from Fairfax. They have a good selection of weapons and tactical gear at pretty good prices.

They also have a store in Quantico, Va. It's a little further south off I-95.  Check out their website at

Quantico Arms

Good luck, I think you will appreciate Virginia. I spent 5 1/2 years in the San Jose area (Mountain View) and can't believe how much the state has shut down 2nd Amendment rights of it's citizens. There used to be a great Black Rifle store in downtown Mt View right on Castro St. It's gone now. What a shame.

Anyway enjoy your stay in Virginia.

there are two indoor ranges with good rental selections: blue ridge arsenal and shooters paradise.  both places have good staffs too but bra doesn't generally have much under the glass as far as browsing goes.  there is also Virginia Arms which has probably the best group of guys working there with the best selection of firearms for sale.  the only better place to see guns at all is the nra hq museum.

Get a map, VA roads are very strange
I got a bit lost going to Virginia Arms, didn't see 28, took 236(?) instead from 66. From here I went to Quantico arms in Woodbridge, I could not find that shop! I saw the building like in their site, but there's no banner or marking of any kind, so I just left.

if you think our roads are bad, you should try driving around miami.  i was just down there.  every sign has two of three designations for each road--route number (fl 943), road number (42nd), road name (sunrise). (all names etc are mde up.)

and if you took 236 instead of 28 you hadn't gone west far enough on 66.  and quantico arms in woodbridge is kinda not easy to find sometimes if you don't know what you are looking for.  if you are on price william county parkway it is on the road that ends at the light where the fire dept is.  i can't remember the name of the road sorry and i don't want to look at a map right now.
