Hello Ross, the biggest difference between the 510 Tactical series (511/512) and the 550 Military series (551/552) is the Night Vision capability. If you are not interested in the NV capability then stick with the 510 Tactical series. The difference between the 511 and the 512 is that the 511 uses a type "N" battery and the 512 uses AA batteries. The type "N" batteries can be found at Wal-Mart or Kmart. The type "N" batteries last 70 hours and the AA batteries last around 330 hours. You will notice in the pics that the AA Battery units are much longer than the "N" battery units.
