I went to my house in upstate NY for the weekend. We are very close to PA and always buy our food and essentials at Walmart. They had a Cricket .22 rifle for $114 that I wanted to get for my son. When I asked to purchase the rifle I was asked if I was a PA resident, I of course replied no. I was then told that it was federal law that Walmart could not sell firearms to NY residents, as well many other states. How is this possible? Shouldn't this be more of a state law not a Federal law. Here is the sign from walmart

I agree. Federal law should be every state, not just a few states.

Funny All of the NY Walmarts I have been in Lately all carry firearms and sell to NY residents! Seems this might be strange to me!

I tried a Google search on various parameters but turned up nothing.  I was surprised to see IN, CO, VA, NV and MI on there as they are NOT in the same class as NY, MD, CT, NJ, MA, IL, DC, RI and CA by a long shot.  I was thinking it might be a contiguous state only rule since several states like NY have not rescinded that rule from their laws but NY is contiguous to PA so that would still be good to go.

I guess only Walmart legal knows...

The only thing i can thing of is because they are selling MSR.. and they dont want a employee not knowledgable to do something stupid,,   There is nothing stopping selling to a ny resident unless you live in nyc...

Some Manager going by who know what probably decided that his feelings or something he mis-interpreted was now "the Law"
You'd be surprised at how often this happens, and while I appreciate the good deal a Cricket for $114. is, FUCK WM!
I noticed the sign didn't list other States: I wonder what they'd have said of you'd said "No, I'm from Alabama and it's not on your list."
Under un-SAFE a Dealer has to do a NICS check: what fucking difference does it really make if you're doing one in Northern New York or Southern Carolina; you're still doing the same paperwork and same check and are still subject to the same State Laws once you cross the State Line......make it as damn hard as you can to make legal and lawful purchases more and more difficult and those who quasi want a gun will give up, which is a small part of the grand scheme to dis-arm everyone. (well except the government controlled henchmen) God forbid we ever suffer here what the Russians, Germans, Indonesians, and virtually every other people have once they were dis-armed....it will be most interesting as well as most tragic.

That is bullshit.  I bought a shotgun at a PA gun show.

that is absolutley not accuracte.

you may purchase a long gun as long as it is legal for you to own in your location of residence.  handguns may be purchased at another location but must be shipped to your home FFL(less the one district in texas where it was ruled unconstitutional)

Perhaps its easier to claim its "the Law" rather than admit we really don't want to sell to people out of State....hint: they make their own signs.
How often have we bitched about being carded over buying a pistol caliber cartridges, yet there you are back in there.
All they need are bodies that'll work for just above minimum wage and think ten cents an hour is a big raise.....

The funny thing is I have never been in a Walmart that sells ammo or firearms.  All the ones I have been to and usually go to, Farmingdale, NY, Westbury, NY, East Meadow, NY and Uniondale, NY (once), do not carry guns.  I have also been to several in the greater Toronto area and they do not carry guns either (obviously).  I suppose I should meander to one off of Long Island some time.

It's odd because the Dicks sporting goods in the Roosevelt Field mall (heart of Nassau county, not far from Queens) has tons of guns and ammo.

These stores are new within the last 12 years or so.  I recall when Farmingdale was getting ready to open, there was local opposition and a petition drive to stop them selling guns, and Walmart agreed to not sell them.  Westbury had been a K-Mart and East Meadow had been a Caldors.  Again, being newer they too had pressure to not sell firearms and ammo.  Not sure what Uniondale was but it was definitely not a Walmart originally and it not located in the nicest area.  Never been to Dick's at Roosevelt Field.  I haven't been to that mall in quite a while.  I used to go all the time when they had a Remington (shavers) store.  Last time I was there was to get my iPhone fixed at the Apple Store.  Manhasset was more convenient but they couldn't get me an appointment.

Wonder if you could get a reply from corporate explaining this "federal law".

Well we all know that its in no way a federal law and just stupid corporate policy and at best all we can do is get the sign changed from federal law to Walmart policy but lets think for one second...........does this not seam to be completely discriminatory? Walmart refuses to sell an object to a person just because they are from a different state. I bet you can go in and buy a wrist-rocket, mace, deer feed, salt licks or what ever else this stupid state bans with them batting an eye!
