In my continued search for a shooter friendly place to relocate to I have been considering
Grand Junction.

What opinions and advice does anyone have about this area?  Again, both the quality of
life and the cost of housing/living is important.  However, the area for places to shoot and
type of gun shops are important as well.

I really apppreciated all the feedback I got when looking into the Pueblo area.  All the
feedback (positive or negative) goes a long way in helping to  research something like this.
Thank you all.

Although we don't live there, we like Grand Junction and would move there if it would not be so far from our kids.  Great climate with mild winters (gets warm in the summer, as does Pueblo), great places to shoot east of town along I-70, nice laid-back atmosphere.  Gene Taylors Sporting Goods and a new Sportsman's Wharehouse.

I live in Montrose, Colorado (60 miles south) and I love this area.  You can just about shoot anywhere that you desire.  There are thousands of areas in the BLM and Forrest Service boundaries.  As fas as gun shops go!

A Pawn\Guns

I worked for Dave's Guns in Denver for awhile and the deals that A Pawn offers are unheard of.  His store is very unorganized but he has 1,000's of guns in stock in his warewhouse.  Just ask him what your looking for and he usually has it in the back.  Here's the great part!  He only charges $10.00 over dealer cost for any firearm!  You order it 10 dollars, he orders it 10 dollars.  He also gives the highest trade in value that I have ever seen or heard of.  Jim (owner) is an amazing guy and the most hated gun dealer on the western slope (according to other dealers)!  Try him out you won't be disspapointed.

Sportsman's Warehouse is a fine place to kill a lunch hour

They have squat for any of the pistols I want though... 4 of the last pistols I have asked about they have not had.

Thanks for the replys, guys.  Tell me, do any of you know how expensive housing is-for example, what would a an acre of land and a newer house run for an average price?
I know its a lot higher than Peublo but I don't think its as high as Denver and Colorado Springs.

I just moved out of Grand Junction last month (to Louisiana) after living there for almost 15 years.  I loved the area, probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever lived in my life.

That being said, cost of living is fairly high.  An average 1500 sq ft house on 1/4 or 1/8 acre in a decent neighborhood will run probably around $200k.  An acre of land will add a fair amount to that price.

a BIG +1!!!!!  Jimmy's a great guy, he used to keep my business card tacked up on his wall and call me when something came in that I might be interested in.

Places to shoot - there's the Orchard Mesa Gun Club, a private range on the south side of town.  Dues are something like $40/year.  Basically, it's an outdoor range that you get the combination to the gates to get in (no range officers or anything).  Therre's a public range to the north of town as well.  I belonged to the gun club, but usually just went shooting in the desert on BLM land.

There's also a trap/skeet club (Grand Junction Trap Club) on the south side of town as well that's gotten pretty popular.

For indoor shooting, if you take the NRA personal protection course, you can shoot in the DOW building one night per week (don't remember which night).  It comes in handy during the winter sometimes.
