why are evacuees being sent to the DFW area? The storm track shows the storm will pass sirectly over DFW spawning tornadoes and bringing heavy flood rains. Why evacuate people from a storm center to another storm center? Why not send them east or west instead of ahead of the storm? Jim |

Run from the water ( Storm surge) hide from the wind ( take indoor Shelter) Dallas is a great place to hide, flooding here is only isolated areas. The risk is much less here then on the coast. there are 1500 hospital beds free in DFW and 25,000 shelter beds plus hotels. Theres not much between DFW and houston to hold the mass of people. other parts of the state are getting lots of people too. This is going to be a big evac. got to send them some place. |
I guessing too...because D/FW is the biggest metropolotian area other than Houstonl...could send them to Autsin but I think D/FW would have a lot more room than Austin would. |

Yeah, but with the rains we have been having the ground is saturated, so the storm rain will be all runoff and we will probably have some bad flooding. I didn't think about all the facilities we have, but what happens when we start losing power lines from the wind they are forecasting and the shelters flood? I guess we are the best choice, but it sure sounds funny. Jim |

Pepperbelly, I know it sounds odd to say its safer in DFW than other places. think about how many people die each year from floods in Dfw (its very low) Also not having power does not kill people just makes life harder. We DFW can feed millions of people short term. there are lots of resources here. There are lots of people who plan for these things as a full time job. I guess you can tell I know a little about it. think about this --"how bad is bad" and "how big is big" Chris |
You are right of course. Those are good points. It is hard for me to admit that trained professionals might know a little more than an ignorant hillbilly like me though. Jim |

Austin will probably get it worse than DFW. Y'all should be in pretty good shape. (God I hope so! Our house is empty up there, as I'm deployed for the hurricane and my husband is at Ft Sill.) Latest models show Ike heading over to kick Tyler's ass. This one has been a nightmare, as the models have been all over the place. We have had to constantly revise and shift plans as evacuation locations turn into hurricane targets. I'm just praying as hard as I can pray that this storm doesn't do all the damage it looks like it's going to. |
