All in all I'm about $100 over what the original build plan would have cost, but I feel I got a better rifle out of this. So I'm very happy, especially since I am still under budget, which I had planned at $1200.

I KNOW RIGHT! That was the EXACT thing I said! lol I'd gone to SC Village a handful of times before I ever went to my first training class and had no idea. Then when I'm driving to class I'm thinking "hey this place looks familiar." Then I saw the SC Vill sign and was like "Hey! I know where I am!" lol

Ok so I finally got to zero in and shoot, and lets put it this way -  She shoots better than I do. I am extremely impressed and am bouncing off the walls waiting for next weekend.

5/9/2011 7:48:32 PM EDT
[#17]
So now that the weekend is over, and my 2 day course is completed I can present the findings/results.
Day 1 started off like most other classes would. BZO. I can safely say I
thought I would smoke this portion, be done in 3 rounds, be showered
with praise for being setup and ready to go. Haha yea I was wrong. lol
First of all we shot 5 round strings at first, just to get a feel for
things. Second, we weren't using the Army method of zeroing. Turns out,
we were using the "6o'clock hold" technique. Yea...that was fun.

Our humble little training facility. It's quite a nice little place actually, despite it not looking like much.

Me being me.

Instructor Mike and I catching up with one another as I load mags. Great guy. Love working with him.

Stepping up to the line to begin.

Zeroing begins.

Instructor Matt correcting my form a bit and giving me some tips.

My initial zero. Horrible for three reasons. 1) I was fighting my
glasses to get a sight picture. 2) I was wearing my harness and wasn't
able to get as comfortable as I liked in that "benched" position. 3) The
lady next to me <Very sweet mind you> her weapon had a
compensator on it. A dedicated compensator. So I would finally get a
good sight picture and cheek weld, get my breathing right, start to
squeeze the trigger and BAM!!! She fires and the concussion from her
shot would actually cause my head to move slightly and make me flinch,
throwing my shots off. <That's why there are 6 holes instead of
five.>

What my final zero ended up being. It took everyone maybe 4 times around
to get "right" so to speak, and once I figured out that they actually
wanted my rounds to impact about an inch lower than the black at 25
yards, everything made sense to me.
<Remember I had initially zeroed the way the Army teaches, which is
aim at the dot in the center of the black, and put your rounds in the
circle. So I was used to that way. I like 6o'clock hold better. It will
be explained later on.>
From zeroing we moved on to standing at closer ranges and getting a feel
for where we needed to put our sights in order to score hits where we
want them to go. We started with just 2 rounds in the chest/high chest
area, and then moved on to putting whatever number Instructor Mike
called out into the chest area, and then ultimately moved on to the
failure drill.

Making ready. Note my terrible form.

Putting rounds on target.

Yea...I don't even know what the hell I was doing. lol Maybe visually confirming my safety was on? *shrugs*

Scanning after my string of fire was over.

Initial string hit results.

"Murph" <Instructor Murphy> helping to answer a reloading question I had. I was the only lefty in the class mind you.

Initial results of our switching to a failure drill. Notice all those
shots that are in the chest area? Yup...that's on account of my being
dumb and thinking they wanted the hits on the little black zeroing
target's chest and head. What the hell was I thinking? Fortunately though, I wasn't the only one that thought that. lol!!

End results our the failure drill. As you can see - I actually shot the right head this time.
From there we moved on to positional shooting. Kneeling, crouching,
sitting, and prone. I had a lot of fun doing these drills, and of course
my being the only lefty in class...and the only one able to move with
relative ease into those shooting positions, I got <playfully>
picked on by everyone lol

Dropped into the kneeling position at 25 yards or so. Notice the "haze" around the girl on my left side.

More kneeling. More "haze". Yea...I had to deal with that all day. That is from her damn compensator. lol

Results. Not to terrible. Most of them are in the right area of the chest. And all are on the target, so no fliers.
Next up was crouching. Not my favorite position. I'm built like a 2x4,
not a lab beaker. So I wasn't able to utilize this position to its
maximum effectiveness by resting my elbows where they needed to be to
give maximum stability. That and I have bad knees anyways, so this
really didn't feel that great. But I still think I did okay overall. Of
course...it could have been that damn compensator that make me rock like
a chair, but I'll just blame myself.

Crouching Seiran, Hidden Pain in knees.

This I think was my best looking crouching position, but I was still a bit wobbly.

End results. Like I said not my best position, but all the hits are on paper. So that's a good thing.
From crouching we moved to sitting. By far the technique I am proud to
say I am very good at. And the one that got me poked fun at by everyone,
because I could actually sit down and then move right back to my feet
without having to use my hands. Yea I had fun on that drill lol

Like a rock. By far my favorite improvised position.

Another string, but position looks pretty strong still.

Much better grouping with this stance than crouching.
Then finally we hit the prone position. Many regard this as the best
position to get accurate hits, and I would agree. But diving to the deck
on rocks/gravel is not fun, even with a carpet thing in between.
Yea my knees didn't take to well to this, but with the adrenaline going
and my having a freaking blast! - I didn't notice. Not until I got home
anyways lol

Waiting to start the drill. Yes, that is my tongue. Not sure if I was
poking fun at Gary, or if I was just thrilled to be moved one more
target away from Kristen and her compensated rifle

Down and putting rounds out.

Another string.

End result.
All of this brings us up to the end of the day. We backed up to about 50
yards and did a confirmation of zero. This was also used to show us why
we used the 6o'clock hold when we zeroed earlier in the day. After that
we got to have a little bit of fun <Well...a lot a bit of fun
actually. > and that was where we got to put all of what we learned during the day together, and to get a small feel of where we were.

My confirmation of zero at 50 yards.

3 shots, 3 hits. A little to the left, but overall I was told this was
good. I did adjust one click right though after this. Just to be sure.

"Fighting my way up" - The fun starts. Start standing, drop to prone. 2 shots, 2 hits on target.

"Fighting my way up" - Part two. Kneeling. <Sitting was missed as I
got the two hits faster than my sister could get a shot of it. > 2 shots, 2 hits on target.

"Fighting my way up" - Part three. Standing. 2 shots, 2 hits on target. Also notice the slightly better form.

Talking with Instructor Tim after my drill was done.

Same drill, but this time she got me sitting.

Enjoying the prone position once again.
After that, the day was done. I went home, found out my little sister
was cooked like a lobster <I told her to wear a hat and sunscreen
lol> and that I had a nice little red going on my arms. But I felt
great. Got some good food in me, stalked ARFCOM for a bit, and racked
out to be fresh and ready for day 2.
Day Two: The return.
Day two started off with a bang, literally. No classroom time this time.
As soon as we arrived it was gear up and get on the line. Failure
drills to start the day off. Replacing Kristen on my left this day was
Gary. He and I became good buddies over this course. We even got a
little competitive. We had a great time.

Lined up and ready! Day Two begins!

Yea, he's dead.

The end result of our remaining warm ups.

Instructor Mike demonstrating the Indoor ready.

Just a view after a few runs of Indoor ready.

Drilling. Gary and I were about neck and neck. He might forget to lock
the charging handle forward, or rack the charging handle to chamber a
round, but when he put his mind to it he was a damn good shooter.

The end result.
Next up we moved to weapon transitions due to malfunctions. Now they did
things a little strangely I thought. They had us work as if we didn't
have a sling on our weapons. So we learned what I call the "butt tuck"
method <Yes I got that from Dynamic Shotgun> and the bringing it
down to the indoor ready and holding it with our support hand, and
shooting one handed with our pistol.

Listening to the drill description while on-line.

Bang. Bang. Click!

Rifle tucked away, pistol out to play.

More pistol play.

End result. One flier just over the left shoulder. I was pissed about that. I made sure not to do it again.

My buddy Gene and myself on the back line waiting for our relay's turn to drill.
From the close up stuff Instructor Matt decided it was time to see if we
remembered what we were doing at the 50 yard line, only now we were at
the 100 yard mark. Yea this was a blast. I didn't understand it at
first, but after running it a few times it made sense. Two purposes were
served by doing this. 1) We learned how to shoot at 100 yards, and see
that our initial 25 yard zero worked just as well here and 2) We saw
that doing all those drills at 100 yards made it incredibly easier to do
them at 50 yards.

Waiting my turn.

On the line, waiting to start. <Only two pics taken of this, as my
sister was afraid the camera was going to die if she kept using it again
all day.>
From this we moved on to moving drills. This was one of the things I was
waiting for. I loved these drills during handgun training, so I
couldn't wait to get on-line with my rifle. We do use Coaches for this
though, in an effort to maintain safety and regulate the speed of the
shooters. But it doesn't actually interfere too much, if at all.

My partner starting the drill.

My turn. Dry run first.

Live firing about to start. No shots during the actual drill though for
safety reasons, so she took a shot mainly of Instructor Matt. lol
From there we did a 50 yard standing to prone drill where we were to
fire two shots standing, and then drop to prone and fire two more. After
which we did a variation of that where we are moving forward and
scanning the area, and then we drop to prone and fire 2 shots. It was
entertaining to watch some of those guys get down into prone in a hurry.

Gary and I chatting while we wait for our turn.

Gary and I on-line and ready.

Moving to prone drill prior to start. And yes, that is a Mini-14.
After that fun was over, we got to do one of the best parts of the
entire course: Barrier shooting. I don't know how many of you are
familiar with this, but it really opens your eyes to flaws in your
shooting positions, makes you use alternate shooting positions if
necessary, and this was also where we were introduced to shoulder
transitioning. I can't begin to tell you how many groans erupted from
the class when Instructor Matt mentioned that little tidbit. lol And I
will admit I got a little freaked, as most of you know I can't see
anything but a stained glass window view of the world out of my right
eye. Not to fear however, I let Matt know and he told me that was ok and
that I could run the drill all on my left side, but he did ask that I
try it right side as well, which I happily obliged.

In the starting position, rifle on my "strong" side. I don't have a shot
of it, but I moved to the first barrier, leaned out and using both eyes
open and "reflex" fire I put one shot down range with my right side.
Believe it or not I was only about 2 to 4 inches to the right of the
target at about 45 yards. I was impressed with myself on that one, as I
got that close with just basically "feeling" where the point of aim was.

After my first shot I transitioned to my usual shooting side and
finished that barrier drill. This is my improvised kneeling position, as
after I took my right handed shot I didn't bother to adjust my kneeling
position, as I had good line of sight on target, with minimal exposure.
So I went with it.

Next barrier. It was originally a wooden corner side USPS mailbox, but
the wind kept knocking it over, so we switched to a barrel. I am still
using my improvised kneeling position, but like I said it worked for me
so I stuck with it. I'm currently engaging Target #5 on my right side by
leaning to the right.

Same barrier, but this is me staying behind cover and adjusting my
position to take the two shots on Target #1 that was on my left side,
while keeping as much of myself behind cover as possible.

Third barrier. We had the option of kneeling, crouching, sitting, or
going prone on this one, so I stuck with kneeling. It was working for
me. Though now that I think about it I would have loved to do it
sitting. I should have done sitting.

The final barrier. This was a standing only, 2 shots on Targets #1 and
#5, and only on your left side. So of course I worked it like a slave.
That whole drill was fun and I really wanted to run it again, but we
only ran it once. This was also where Instructor Matt and one of the
student's allowed the class to shoot their rifles, which were custom
builds that they were developing for the school. They were pretty nice
rifles actually. I'll make a small description of them at the end.
Lastly, we did some moving drills without coaches, but we weren't firing
all the way through on these. We would walk and scan the area, and when
the command was called out we would stop and engage in a failure drill,
and transition to our pistols if we had a malfunction. For this drill
you'll notice I wasn't running my personal AR. I had asked a classmate
if I could try his, because he was running an AFG and an EOTech on his
rifle, and I wanted to try them out and see if I liked them. Overall I
liked the AFG, but wasn't a huge fan of the EOTech. It was a nice optic
yea, but I just didn't really like it. <I also ran this drill a
second time with the second relay using only my pistol, because I still
had pistol rounds left over and I thought it would be a lot of fun.
Also...the classmate that let me use his rifle for my drill, picked up
mine and ran his drill with my rifle.  No pics of the pistol run though.
Sorry.>

Gene and I on-line, waiting to start the drill.

Good old fashioned gun play. And there's that "haze" again. This time I'm the one shooting that annoying ass comp.
Overall I had an awesome time during this class, and everyone could see
it plain as day. My sister still remarks about how I had the biggest
grin on my face every time I turned around. I made some new friends and
learned a lot. Gene and Gary were two of the greatest guys I could have
met and made the class even more fun. And of course the Instructor's. I
can't say enough good things about Murph and the rest of those guys.
They really do care about the students and making sure we get the most
out of the training and instruction that we can, and they're all a damn
riot as well. They will playfully poke fun at people for little quirks
and make all of us laugh, and that really helps to keep us on the path
and keep us in good spirits as well. My being a lefty and later everyone
finding out I'm a Brit was the cause of much laughter, and Gary being
Gary really got us going too.
Yea Murph loved us lol I'm sad I can't take the advanced course next
weekend, but budget doesn't allow it. But there's always next time.
And in regards to that rifle I mentioned - It was a neat little thing.
Base model weighed in at 5.5lbs, and most of that was due to it's
polymer lower construction. Plum Crazy was the maker of that, and the
16" upper was built by Centurian Arms. As I mentioned they are going to
be built and used as loaner weapons for the school, but they were also
letting people know where they could pick them up if they were
interested, and as I recall 4 people ordered one that day. I was even
interested to be honest, but I didn't really agree with the price point
<Base Model was something like $1450 or something close to that.>
and not to mention my rifle I'm in absolute love with.
Speaking of my rifle, she performed beautifully on ammo that almost
everyone had told me was utter junk, or wouldn't run worth a damn, and
some in my class hadn't even heard of it before. But I went through 300
rounds of it flawlessly, and was actually getting pretty decent groups
as well. After I used that up I ended up running 100 rounds of the
Federal bulk pack brass stuff and that shot beautifully as well. I also
got to put something close to 40 or 50 rounds of PMC bronze downrange
and that stuff again ran terrific. All of that stuff was eaten like
candy. And what I was really pleased with was the Slip 2000 EWL that I
bought. I took my rifle and did a cleaning and lubing with the stuff on
Friday, because I wanted a pristine rifle for class <40 rounds of
Tulammo and CLP for lube was on the bolt, and Slip says to clean all
that stuff away before application>, and I didn't bother cleaning or
lubing the rifle after that and still had no malfunctions or anything. I
am definitely using Slip as my go-to cleaner and lubricant from now on.

Oh yea I'm in love with that Tula stuff. Cheap as hell but runs like a greyhound in my rifle. No issues with it whatsoever, and it was pretty damn accurate as well. Hell the school's training ammo is all Wolf. They buy that stuff by the truckload and run it through all their guns.

Yea the polymer coated stuff is generally wolf and tula. And yea it's ok. They just don't allow SS109/M855 <The green tip AP stuff> and tracer ammo.

Requirements are pretty easy. Go here to their homepage and it will tell you everything you need to know. As to making a fool of yourself - Won't happen brother. The exact amount of experience I had with my carbine prior to this class was exactly 40 rounds on my home range, and half of that was to zero the rifle. The other half was me just aiming at the target and blasting away for fun.

We had people in the class that had never handled an AR in their life, to people that have had experience in the Military with them. "General" Carbine is the entry course. So you can't go wrong. Now to my knowledge they don't have anymore General Carbine classes scheduled for the year, but keep looking back on the site, or call the office and ask Cheryl or one of the others and find out if they have any others planned.

And yes you can. I highly recommend FTA for classes.

Yeah, I went to the homepage and I'm interested in the Long range bolt action, shotgun tact. of course the Gen. Carbine...

On the handgun part... is there any thing that is not allowed. Like I have a couple handguns but I'd use either the HK .45 or my S&W .357 6 shooter... Yes I like to bust out the dirty harry, once in a while... I'd like to go to one of the classes with it because they might know some good tips/ tricks about them.

It's cool that you brought it up man... this will be one of the things I'll be looking forward to.

Damn, I want to build my .308 AR 20"... I'm planning a sniper set up... something for long range...

Really... I'll have to look into it a lil more... I'll have to get my brother an AR15 so we can go take the courses together... I think it would be fun... Learn and get to blow off some steam....

Thanks...

Hell just buy a La Rue OBR and you will be ready to go!

Quoted:
Yeah, I went to the homepage and I'm interested in the Long range bolt action, shotgun tact. of course the Gen. Carbine...

On the handgun part... is there any thing that is not allowed. Like I have a couple handguns but I'd use either the HK .45 or my S&W .357 6 shooter... Yes I like to bust out the dirty harry, once in a while... I'd like to go to one of the classes with it because they might know some good tips/ tricks about them.

It's cool that you brought it up man... this will be one of the things I'll be looking forward to.

It's all good brother. I don't mind the side conversation. You gonna bring the OBR to a class? Or something else?

Okay, I just skimmed through your post, OP, but they have a class just for people that are stuck running AR with BBs?  How did that work out when trying to reload?

How so???? Would it be okay to swap out BB to the standard mag release for the class?

We trained around them. One or two guys had those magazines from Calegalmags.com that were modified with the baseplate having a tool on it, and then since our strings of fire weren't very long, we all could reload during the minute or so in between drills.

I run NOTHING but SilerBear out of my Spikes. I have NEVER had any issues what so ever. I get (if I do my part) about 0.75 ish out of my 16 inch Spikes Upper. Never had an extraction issue, FTF, or a FTF. Just run it wet and never ahve issues. I think that whole"BRASS" vs "STEEL" issue is a just old news. I have a bunch of the old farts at my range that get upset if you run steel cased ammo. I run it no issues on my end!

Okay, now I understand.  But, it wasn't too much of a hinderance, right?  Plus, were there more rifles with BBs? Or more legally registered AWs?  Not that I expected you to ask everyone using the standard mag button that question, but I'm just curious as to what was out there.

Wasn't a hindrance at all. And I'm pretty sure everyone there had a bullet button of some kind. We had a LEO in class with us, though I'm not sure if he was running a work rifle or a personal rifle. If he was running a work rifle then that would be the only one I can think of that might actually be an "assault rifle". As to what was out there, almost everyone was running an AR15. The only two exceptions were the older lady with the Mini-14 <She's in a few of my pics> and her son who was running a California AK-47.

Give FTA a chance for training. Doesn't matter what course you take, you won't be disappointed.
