Just installed Xbuntu onto my comp, Hopefully I didn't kill off everything on the XP side.....
Other than testing xbuntu this post is pretty much a complete waste.

How do you like Xbuntu? Was it hard to install next to Windows?

It's really pretty simple to install.  I used a Linux distro on my notebook for a class last semester.  I think I used Ubuntu.  I really liked how streamlined it was, very easy on the resources **cough - unlike vista - cough**.  I'd still be using it if I could get programs like AutoCAD and Matlab to run on it!

I've been running Ubuntu exclusively since last October.  I can get most things to work under WINE if I need to.  I love it.

Easiest linux distro to setup and get working.  It does take a bit of work here and there, but overall, it's pretty much as easy as Booting off the live cd and clicking the install icon.  I think the latest version has an option to install it under windows, like an app, so you don't really have to mess with a true dual boot setup.

I usually just install it on a seperate hard drive to boot to, however.  I've had better luck just swapping cables than I have with messing with LiLo, bootrecords, and such.

Eh, wine is okay for the uppity crowd.  Me, I like the beers.

And WTF is this Xboxto thing?  Some sort of new fangled video game?  I already gots me an Atari.

Open source operating system.  I have my system set up to run both XP and Xbuntu.

No licensing requirements, can actually add your own programming to the system if you want.

GUI (Graphic User Interface - think windows) for those who prefer it.  Its sort of the ultimate FU Bill Gates!

SO ar it seems ok but then again I think I am up to maybe 30 minutes of experience with it. Looks promising though.

Have you ever been able to run anything like Matlab using Wine?  I never really looked too much into it, just ran a dual boot setup because I assumed it would be too difficult to get programs like Matlab to run.  That would be wicked awesome if you could.  I loved Ubuntu while I had it.

The newest WINE distro is a lot easier to use than in the past.  Now, you basically right click on your app, choose Install/Open with WINE, and off it goes.  Sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves and start playing with conf files, dependencies, and libraries, but really, most stuff works pretty well on its own.

The WINE App DB is where I check to see if others have had success with a particular app under WINE or not.  Most people will include how-to's on installation, needed libraries, unresolved issues, etc.  Looks like MatLab works for the people that have tried it.

Why not install Windows XP via Virtual Box?

One can do that do.  Hardware interaction is a bit funky with virtual machine though...RAM and CD/DVD drives especially act a bit funky.  So, it winds up being a double-edged sword.  Apps work, but then the hardware starts acting up on you.  So, depending on your needs for windows, sometimes a dual boot/separate drive with install is the better choice.  IME, if you can get the app to work under WINE, that beats having to mess with Windows at all.

I agree with your final statement.

Yea, I do have a copy of Virtual Machine and toyed with it but I didn't really like it.  I'll look in the Wine DB and see what they have to say for Matlab.  I'll stick with the dual HDD setup I've got for now but who knows, I could be going back with the penguin as primary after all.
