| I've never been out to this range before, but I understand it's about the only free option near Madison. Any thoughts on the quality? Will it be absolutely packed on a weekend if the weather's good? Trying to decide if I want to drive an hour that way or 2 hours to get to my parent's private land. |

It was rebuilt 2 years ago. Covered benches/Line. 7yd pistol, 50yd and 100 yds lines Only real down side is since its free I've run into target backers having been shot in half. I started bringing my own as a just in case.
On nice weekends its packed. I go early when I go. Most of the crowd starts to filter in after 10ish *usually* Getting there early I may run into 1 or 2 others arriving at the same time. As often as not no one shows up for a bit |

I haven't been out there since last summer though so it may be different now. |

It is a very nice range now. The downside is all the clowns go out there too. Watch your back when downrange. First hand witness to some jackass loading his lever gun at the 100 yd range while we had called cold range. It was packed since it was like a few weeks before gun deer season. When I reminded him we had a cold range, he copped an attitude, saying "dude, I know it's a cold range". I'm no RSO, bUT I don't want some random dude "accidentally" putting a bullet in me when I'm putting up fresh paper.
Plus that day there were 5 kids running around unsupervised, plus another random kid fingerblasting his AR, not on the line, whining to his dad about wanting to shoot. Other than that, it's a great range. Keep your head on a swivel. |

Quoted: Thanks for the feedback guys. Those were pretty much my primary concerns.... packed and/or idiots. Maybe worth the extra hour drive each way to have some solitude. They were going to fix the flooding issue at the end of the 100 yard range but if the fix didn't take, it might be muddy. |

Yeah, it's highly unlikely the traffic will be as bad as right before deer season. We used to go out to yellowstone frequently, before the remodel. The range idiot incidents seemed to be fewer, but we still had them.
More often than not, there are decent, safe shooters going to have a relaxing day at the range. I have other strange tales of yellowstone, but whatever. OP, it IS a good range, just be aware that you might run into some ass clowns going there. I'd approach it the same as going to a bar. You go to have a good time, but watch out for "THAT GUY". Plus, there are other options within the same drive time from Madison, albeit they are pay to play ranges. Milford hills is great. They have a 100 yd range. Just take your mud boots. Baraboo has a nice private range. Just get to one of the places to buy a year long $35(I think) range membership. They have up to 200 yds there. |
