I'm putting in for a .223 for target, fox & vermin, I'd appreciate a quick heads up on all useful info on the calibre eg sensible ranges for fox, rabbits etc.
Any thing that will help with my application basically. Cheers. Andy. |

Hi,.223 is excellent for fox and a lot of other types of shooting, not so much for rabbits(unless you like exploding bunnies). As for range I would say safety first and what ever range you can 100% identify you target. ^This really. The 22 would be better for rabbits. The 223 is excellent with some frangible rounds on fox, but only out to 100yds or so. Otherwise some decent soft point ammo would be good out to any distance you can safely place your round on the target. Never tried the light weight bullets on foxes (40gns or so) but the 55gn soft point ammo does the trick. Good luck with the variation. |

just tell them fox , do not say it's for rabbit , you will not get a .223 for rabbit , forget about distance , .22 , then .17 then .223 etc . they just know caliber and pest , just say fox Yes, we have some small, grey, long eared foxes with bobbed tails down this way |

| Laughed at that one withthe deer reminded me of a numpty I know who claimed he shot roe and fox with one of them air bottle air guns. Better than a 22 he said funnily enough he has proper guns now and the pea shooter has gone. Numpties like that shouldn't have guns in my opinion. |

If it helps, I can say that's an acceptable reason for a rifle chambered in .223 Rem under the Met and Wiltshire firearms licensing. It'll work for a variety of calibres. .223 Rem and .308 Win are both very popular calibres, with many excellent firearms in either calibre, so you may find yourself wanting several one day Different shooting disciplines or rifle configurations will usually provide good reason for something like an additional AR-15. You may want one with optics and one with open sights, etc. It's good enough-a reason here, but the licensing department is sensible and probably knows you can only use one at a time! Quoted:

Many years ago I had to duck (no word of a lie!) as a chap shooting his Rapid 7 MK1 .177 from the same bench as me, wheeled to take a shot at a large doe that had come within 15ft of us. He had been telling me about 10 minutes earlier how he adjusted the power on his Rapid to 30ft/lbs, and had fitted an adjuster to get it back to 12ft/lbs quickly. The deer fled before he could take the shot. It was a private site you could pay to shoot at. No supervision, so it often meant dealing with some fairly unsavoury people. I didn't fancy getting into an argument with him and his friend over it, so packed up shortly after and left. Apparently it isn't unknown to find deer with pellets or .22LR bullets in them, so I expect out experiences aren't unique unfortunately. Also heard a fair few stories of people that shot them with off-ticket Career 707s and the like; they can make a good 60ft/lbs out the factory. |
