We've got these damn little sugar ants in the house. Not like we're being invaded or anything, but we're finding them in every room of the place.

I've got no idea where there coming from; there's never enough of them to trace.

Everything is neat and clean in the house, no food left out or anything.

Any ideas on what to do to get rid of them?

I had the same problem a few years ago.

there is a kind of "trap" that doesn't actually catch the ants, it lets the ants take the poison back to their lair, and everyone gets to share the deadly goodness.
so instead of killing just the ones that find the trap, it kills the entire anthill.

I don't remember the name, or manufacturer, but it was pretty cheap, and I think I got it at fred meyers.
it took a few weeks, but they finally stopped showing up.

I just put the trap in an area where I saw them frequently.

The in-laws have been fighting those little bastards for years now.  They have pretty much given up.  If it were me I would call an exterminator and pay the $200 or what ever to get rid of them (we have the reserve $$ sitting in the safe for just such an event, the wife don;t want to mess around).  They are probably climbing up through a whole somewhere in the flooring or the siding or walls or something.   the enemy is a crafty one.

I got an OLDish house, 1948 GI bill house, used those traps for two years and havent seen ANY ants for 3 years!

You can get those at Bimart too! Just be carefull, with the UMC boxes of ammo on sale you might come home with some "unexpected" items in your bag

They will often nest IN the house-check for an area with a lot of humidity and maybe some wet rot.

I've had a few in my apartment this last year. They got into the wall behind the sink, and found a way up to the counter. Only been a few, but if I see more, the poison is coming.

Exactly

They always seem to hole up in the kitchen around the sink. Check your foundation for fractures and openings they can get in through easily, this time of year theyre just looking for a warm place and maybe a bite. Spring, they start scout/destroy missions for the colony...

Thats when you attack!!!!!

Traps for a little while.  Grant's Ant Steaks work sometimes as does Taro.

Then do the poison.  Inside, outside, under the house, every crack and crevice.

Worked for me.  Be careful if you have kids.  Poison might not be such a good idea if they are still crawling around the floor (the kids that is)

Grant's Ant Steaks

Those things work wonders. Also, get yerself some of that Ortho ant/roach/wasp killer that places like Home Debit sells, the stuff in the one gallon jug with the sprayer attached. Spray every door, window, and every hole on the outside of your home. When that stuff dries, its non toxic to humans and animals.

Also spray wherever water enters into a room- under the sink and in the laundry room, etc.

Get a caulking gun and clear sealant and close up all the openings in and around the kitchen cabinets and anywhere else they turn up.

You could also take the $0.02 approach:  Boric acid - either in 100% powder form, or mixed with sugar.  Cheap, and relatively nontoxic.  (Your kids and pets might get sick or die from eating the stuff - but they'd have to eat a fair amount of it first.  See www.natbat.com/docs/boron.htm.)  Boric acid is also used as an ingredient in many commercial ant killing compounds.

Colorado State University article on ants - contains info on boric acid baits.
