There are no public ranges here. The WMA ranges over across the TN line were shut down a few years ago. People shoot on their own (or a friend's) land.

ETA: This may be changing soon.....but not before you get here.

You can go fishing in several places around there... I believe there is a Ranger/DNR type of station off of 515 you can stop and ask about license requirements and where to fish on the lake or on the Taccoa River.  If not there is a fly fishing store down town down that can give yo info...

You can rent tubes and Float down the Taccoa River, there is some great hiking.  If you are into Sporting Clays, Noottootla Creek farms is a lot of fun Linky except when your kid shows you up. It is about 15-20 minutes from down town.

I suggest you drive down Aska Road and eat at the Taccoa River in... Foods OK/Good but the location is nice...it is also right near the place to rent tubes.

We have a place off of Aska Road...

Not sure about where to shoot AR's..... though...

As for other things...places to eat? Blue Jeans Pizza and Pasta and Toccoa Riverside Restaurant (Smoked Trout Pasta is awesome)

We rented a cabin up there for our honeymoon in '04. Those were our two favorites when we ventured out ;)

If you're going to buy groceries and no eat out every night, remember that the town shuts down around 8:00 PM. After that, you have to drive to Ellijay for anything, and that's a good little drive.

Edit: Helen is a tourist trap, but I enjoy it there. Brasstown Bald is very interesting, as far as mountains go. The drove through the Nantahala Gorge was very cool, to me. If you're not planning on rafting, you should. If you've got time, the trip over to Chattanooga is worth it. Lookout Mountain (and Ruby Falls, waterfall under the mountain) and the Aquarium was awesome. I could have spent all day at the aquarium. Going up to Asheville gives you the Biltmore (everybody should do it once) and Chimney Rock and Lake Lure.

I don't know what all your family likes, but there's something in that area for just about everybody.
