Current river around Rolla St. James area.
Or the niangua around Lebanon, (it's always packed there).
Or maybe even the Osage down there around JC.

The Meramac River in the Sullivan/Bourbon/St. James area is nice to float durring the week. Kind of busy there during the weekends in my opinion.

The best is not much farther than the also-rans. I'd do Current River. Most of the outfitter are about a two hour drive from Jeff. Generally, I prefer the upper stretches, which are closer to you. Weekdays are better than weekends.

IME, stay far away from the Niangua unless you want to paddle a bunch (there are some really dead spots on that river) and enjoy lots of drunken college kids.

Niangua sucks. If I want to paddle that hard, I'll float the Little Platte again

Ibelieve one of the best rivers in Mo to float is the St. Francis, i here it is a fast sumbitch

The Gasconade outside of Vienna is about 40 minutes from Jefferson city. Look up Indian Ford Resort. I'm not sure what they charge now.

I think Hilkameyers in Freeburg offers a float service too.

I went to the NRO Campgrounds a year or so ago. Didn't get to float cause the river was too far up due to rain north of us. As far as campground, it was retarded. If you're into drunken 14 year olds and rap music blaring at 24/7 then you're good to go. I almost knocked this kid out. I'm pretty sure he was 18.

Maybe we should call EDS. They have experience herding cats.

These folks are my neighbors.  Located 1.5 hours South of JC.  It's not crowded on this stretch of river.  Easy floating and the fishing is normally very good.  Our farm borders the campground/resort property (My family actually built the resort in the 1930's), so if you would like to get together for an informal range session, that could be arranged.

We go there every year in July. A good float and good people, although farther from JC than you may want to go.

Since i live in Salem, I vote for the Current river.  I am on it alot.  I go on a 4-5 day float/camping trip every summer and am doing a 3 day float in two weeks.  Not too fond of the upper current...  i usually put in at pulltite and go from there...  the upper has alot of shallows and debris.  The mid to lower part is alot deeper and wider...

The upper Jacks Fork is really nice.  The Current, Black, and Big Piney are good float streams.

I would recommend the Current river.  You can come about 1 hour south of Rolla.  You can put in there and have any number of options for lengths of the float.  Beautiful area, a chance to see wild horses,  and some beautiful water with small mouth bass and other fish.

I hate canoers so I am out.

People in canoes seem to not understand that the faster a motor boat is going the less wave it is making.

No motor boats are allowed in the Ozark Scenic Riverways portion of the Current RIver. Frankly, that's one of the things that makes it such an enjoyable river.

ETA: OPPS! I'm wrong. See below .. . .

If by some chance you guys do try and organize a float, i might possibly be in, i'de just have to check the schedule.  I was trying to organize a day or two float with my family, and they all slowly backed out one by one....

Wrong, wrong, wrong. There are motor size restrictions but motor boats are allowed.

I stand corrected. Thanks.

Not so sure you are correct about this...  since i use a boat with a motor.  I think the hp limit is less than 15 or something like that...  i know they are allowed on the current river though...  editted for being VERY late with a reply...

since i am off the whole month of June if any of you would like to do a trip on the current then i am more than willing to go along.  I have a 14 foot jonboat that I use that easily hauls 4-5 days of camping needs...  IM me if you are thinking about it...

Don['t know about awesome, but we always fished smallmouth down around van buren, we caught quite a few, but we were in boats with motors so i'm not sure how well you would do in a canoe.....

The Courtois around Steelville is pretty nice.  Bass' River Resort has some nice float packages available.

I'm not really interested in paying a resort, I've got access to canoes.... I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a put-in and a pick-up that are about a day's paddle (through awesome smallmouth fishing) apart.
