People drown every year on Lake Michigan because of riptides or strong undertows.  I haven't been there, and I don't know if they are common in that area or not.  It should be OK - just check before you let your kids get too far out.

Grew up in that area.  Bridgeman is close and has a few decent hole in the wall restaurants.  Don't know if Mt. Olympus is still in business but it used to have good greek food.  New Buffalo has a lot of Chicago people, and it's best to avoid them.  As for the big lake, yeah there are rip tides, and people do drown off of Warren Dunes.  But it's not that bad.  Just don't get in over your head (pun intended).  Usually people would get into trouble going out when it's really rough.  If the winds are blowing up the waves, then stay close to shore.  Beware of the Bluffmen, and the "MelonHeads."  Rumor is Grand Mere is haunted.

ETA:  Tabor Hill Winery is fairly close as well, and the restuarant is very good.  If you get a chance, see if you can get your hands on some Bell's Oberon (if you're a beer drinker).

I used to go there every labor day weekend as a kid, until one year we had a rally bad time and it made me never want to go back.  I spent the first day there blasting flies with a Nerf suction cup dart gun.  Got 500 kills.

The next day there was alot more flies around.  Like a mixture of biting flies and regular flies.  We went to town and bought a crap load of Raid and fly paper.  Some of the little bastards started to bite.

This was the year when Chicago had that really bad heat wave, where a bunch of people died.  We asked the DNR what was up with all the flies, and they said that the heat was causing all the flies to migrate north or something.  I don't know how true that is, but that's what they told us.

Anyways, the next day the sky was dark with flies.  Literally.  You couldn't leave your camper or car without being viciously attacked.  I mean the could of flies was so dense that if you got caught in the middle of them in 3 seconds there would be nothing left of you but a pile of bleached bones.

I have this vivid memory as a child of me running to the bathroom with a black cloud of flies behind me, chasing me.  I was so tired and it was a long way, and I ran and ran and was crying.  It was horrible...

Oh, the humanity!!  LOL.  Those black bastards do hurt!

Been to the dunes a couple times.  Don't look that tall till you climb them!  Heck of a view.
Don't know the area well enuff to give recommendations.  Have fun!

Warren Woods nature preserve in Three Oaks, Mud Lake preserve outside of Buchanan.  I'm not that impressed with Tabor Hill's food, but the wine is good.

Not much to see in Sawyer, I agree with the avoidance of New Buffalo.  Prices for gas are higher between New Buffalo and Bridgman.
