Any sale to a resident of another state need to go through an FFL.

If your selling a long gun, as a private citizen, than you just need to ship the long gun to an FFL of the buyer's choice (within their state). If your selling a handgun than it has to go from an FFL in your state to one in the buyer's state. However not all FFL's will accept long guns sent by private citizens. They may require it to be shipped from an FFL to an FFL. I've been told by others that it may be legal to drive/transport the firearm yourself into another state and do the transfer at their FFL, but you may want to call their FFL ahead to time to ensure this is legal way to do the transfer.

Long guns can apparently be shipped by USPS, check their website for how to ship. Handguns have to be shipped overnight (I think) by UPS (from a hub not a branch office) or FedEx (I think), again check their websites for shipping firearms.

Since your friend is in MA than its possible there are an additional set of local state laws that could impact how to sell/transfer a gun to him. The Massachusetts Laws section of the Northeastshooters.com website can help understand the MA laws and there are people there who may have better answers to your transfer question.
