is simple possession of lock picking tools illegal in Michigan?

The only thing I could find is possession of burglary tools. However I would think that having them in your own home would not constitute burglars tools. Hell, my hammer and pry bar are burglars tools for that matter. But having them in your car at 3am driving around a subdivision of which you have no legitement reason for being there, probably would apply.

750.116 Burglar's tools; possession.
Sec. 116.
Possession of burglar's tools—Any person who shall knowingly have in his possession any nitroglycerine, or other explosive, thermite, engine, machine, tool or implement, device, chemical or substance, adapted and designed for cutting or burning through, forcing or breaking open any building, room, vault, safe or other depository, in order to steal therefrom any money or other property, knowing the same to be adapted and designed for the purpose aforesaid, with intent to use or employ the same for the purpose aforesaid, shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison not more than 10 years.

i understand what your saying, believe me i have no unlawful intent with these tools. I was just recently stocking up on just in case SHTF stuff and thought in that kind of situation, they could be of use. so i was just wondering if simply owning them was illegal.

If you have a reason why not. I repoed cars and had a lock out kit. Tow truck drivers have them. Just create a reason, but I don't want to get you in trouble from my advise. Don't need no stupid prizes.

Become an apprentice locksmith. They were advertising correspondence courses for it a few years ago. Maybe something you could do in your own time?

Picking locks is a skill every man should have. I am dead serious.

As long as you have some vaguely legit reason for them to be in your trunk, you'd probably be OK with lockpicks. If you know anything at all about vehicles go to the secretary of state and pay the $6 for a mechanic's license exam, pick one subject and ta-da....you pass you have a MI mechanic cert number which will let you have things like lock out sets, master key sets, and lockpicks in your vehicle. I was, however, told once not to ever have them on my person or concealed in anyway away from a job, since that will cause you problems.

Cruise around the business district at 2 am with a plasma cutter and oxy-acetylene torch in the bed of your pickup with some chains and see what happens to you.

I keep a few different tools in my car bag in case I have a break down etc...including a Stanley FUBAR tool in my bag....I look at it as an all purpose tool. Maybe I am too prepared?

You may be "overthinking" things.  If the S actually Hits The Fan, what good are "lock pick" tools/skills going to be and why would you waste your time trying to use them when it won't matter anyway.  Are you going to be roaming the streets looking to break into cars or buildings in a "stealthy" manner while civilization as you know it is collapsing around you?  A screwdriver and a hammer will likely be more than sufficient to infiltrate most any car or residential/commercial building in your area in a SHTF scenario.

i was looking at the FUBAR, what are your thoughts on it?

Possesion of lock pick tools is not illegal. Possesion of them with intent to commit burglary or in possesion in the commision of a burglary is illegal.
