I have seen the remains of some pretty big paddlefish aka spoonbills below the dam at Grand Lake. They are always jumping out of the water in the early summer whenever you drive across the lake. I don't think they know why they do it, but it looks pretty weird to be tooling across the lake and have a 4' fish jump out of the water like a tiny whale.
There is a new program for collecting the roe from the females that are snagged and selling it for quite a lot of $$$$ for the ODWC. They will even pick up your fish whole take it to the research center/proessing station and you pick up the filllets. The state record is a fish that weighed 121.2 pounds and was 53 1/2 inches long. The girth was 42 1/4 inches. http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/paddlefish.htm |
| The Neosho River runs about 400 yards off my folks back pasture. We used to go down and watch those jokers snag some BIG paddle fish out over there. OH and the Neosho runs out of Grand Lake for those of you who have been up there. BIG BIG paddle fish are yanked out of there every year. I bet they are not doing real well now with all the rain though. |

Miami, OK seems to be the hot spot for the spoonbill snaggers around here. Quite a few put in at Twin Bridges State Park to snag from boats. The season is just about over for this year. It has been a good year for them. it sure is, and the state has been making a fortune off of the eggs, last year I believe they made about 1.6 million$ |
