Have any of you old men have problems with your prostate and what did you do about it

I never had "problems".  I did, however, have a spike in PSA blood values.  I had to get it biopsied.  I can think of funner things.

Any average can tolerate this even though it is no fun during the procedure.

The after effects, as in blood, are a bit more psycological.

Overall just unpleasant.  If you have a reason to get a prostate biopsy do not hold back.  Get it done.

My PSA spiked and eventually went down, me and my doctor really have no explanation.  Biopsy showed cancer free.

Had a prostate infection last month. Didn't even know that was a thing. Hurt like a bitch and scared the crap out of me, but a 14 day course of Cipro knocked it right out.

First I knew of prostate infections..........I was 23.  Didn't drink the tap water cause it tasted so bad.  Pretty much drank cokes and tea.   6' tall weighed 170.....
Started having lower abdominal cramps that bent me over in pain.  Went to urologist.....yep, did the finger dance.  No fun especially since the old guy didn't tell me not to hold it back.
But the prostate massage and pills cleared it up after a few weeks.    It comes occasionally. More after I hit 40 and weighed 250.   Doctors kept prescribing pills that would clear it temporarily.
And had to go back every 6 to 8 months.   Got tired of it and the hike in prices with Obamacare.......from $80  now is $240 a visit.
Started a twice a day dose of Saw Palmetto capsules...........no more pain.  Keeps flow going pretty good, unless I drink too much alcohol....or coke...then have to double up on the Saw Palmetto.
I would prefer to see a doctor for an annual check but the expense is prohibitive.    The doctors office kept trying to make $150 with PSA tests and I never would.  Turned out the PSA tests were worthless.   Now they try to get $150 for a sonogram of bladder.......another scam.   Don't trust Doctors anymore.
The doctors want to see you being a return customer for monetary reasons.    I suggest you try the Saw Palmetto.   Very affordable and no side effects.  An annual prostrate exam would be good.

This is the kind of stuff they should tell you about in health class. I was 19 when I got my first prostate massage. I went to the doctor not knowing what the hell was wrong with me and it took me a minute to figure out how he was going to examine me. Then you have that oh shit moment. Doc did the deed, then told me I wasn't having enough sex and that I needed to go home and drain my prostate. (another oh shit moment). I went home and my mother inquired what the doctor had told me. I told her the doctor said I wasn't getting enough sex. She didn't mention it again.

I had a second one at 21. I was basically finger raped on the second one. Seriously, my entire abdomen felt like it was punched from the inside out.

This is the kind of experiences that make guys avoid prostate exams for as long as possible when they get older.

My grandfather ended up have some cancerous nodes on his bladder/prostate when he hit 80. They were able to slide a scope up the pipe, cut, laser, irradiate everything they needed from the inside. He had epic stories about pissing blood for a while.

I'm old school, I will ignore it until I'm dead.  Browbeat me. Talk down to me, I don't care.  I watched my father do everything right and suffer for months. No thanks

The yearly manual probing, and tests are recommended by my doc. The colonoscopy every 5 years is not pleasant, but recommended. The test you mail off is nothing but easy, and can spot problems ahead of time. So far no problems for me.

Response to test questions.
They give you a kit that has instructions to shit on a paper layer covering the water in your toilet, not allowing your shit to touch the water that you take a swab sample of, and mail it in a prepared packet to a given address in a packet designed for the task. The sample is analyzed, and the results are sent to your doctor. All sealed and air tight.

Y'all know prostate and colon are two different things, right?

I think you really need to talk to a dr and understand the test you speak of.  If they start to find blood in your sample and is not  related to things like a hemroid then it may be a little to late to help you or at min gone past what would have been a simple fix.  A colonoscopy can help detect things a long time before you have issue or present with issues.

A FOBT is not a replacement in my opinion for a colonoscopy but it is better then nothing.  But also my opinion  is not really worth much.

Yes and both very unpleasant to deal with medically.

My old boss found out he had stage 3 colon cancer last year, found it in his lymph nodes, so they had to remove his colon (or at least part) then do chemo. He had it beat and was back at work doing a training class. Had a massive heart attack and died at 56. He had a little extra weight on him, not huge, was fairly active. Figured the chemo just burned him up. Great guy. Great boss.

So, you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer?

I was told about a treatment, but they referred to it as freezing.

Doc said it can detect different problems with both as well as other GI stuff. I don't know. I am not a doctor or the person who gets to test shit samples sent through the mail. I do what the doctors tell me to do. I don't want to be "the problem patient".

Edit - response to Eric's question.

Sounds like one of my many visits. I had a bad run from 2010-13. 5 different surgeries. Another unrelated to the GI tract, coming up... soon. The years are not kind to us. A list of jobs in construction and renovation have caused my problems, according to the doctors. The diet of a field tech or local field sales rep is not the best. Fast food can kill you.

More war stories. Old age is our price for wisdom. Sounds like some of us start our health issues earlier than others. Good luck to all.
