| As normal it is a new day and i am thinking about a new project. I have always liked Garands but never owned one. I looked over the CMP web page eligibility and understand 99% of it. Just have two questions. Does my CCW count as "Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity"? Also what Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization do you guys recommend? I was thinking of doing the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation. I have been wanting to try ne of their matches and i THINK it also qualifies me for a blue label glock once a year. Any other good suggestions? |

Garand Collectors Association, $25 a year, quarterly magazine, can join at the CMP store, and fulfills club membership requirement. I have used my hunter's safety card as proof of activity/training. I am not 100% sure a GWL will 'work'. That is exactly what i was looking for. Now just to find out about the CCW. |

Yes your GFL is sufficient for the demonstration of marksmanship. The GCA transmits your membership to the CMP. Normally I'd tell anyone in GA to make the drive to Anniston but the CMP has very few rifles at the store. Most of the rifles are being reserved for mail orders Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Any other good suggestions? Yes, GSSF membership qualifies as an affiliate. You get GSSF discount ($100 off/same as blue label) once a year. Supposedly, you have to be a member for a year before you get a coupon mailed to you - not sure if that is enforced. |

I need to look back some, I swear I just saw where the CMP was not taking any orders for M-1 Garands due to extreme back log and low stock. On edit I was wrong. H&R service grade and snipers mods are available. But, the Anniston location is down to only three days a week that they are open. |

They cut the hours back because there are so few rifles to put out in the stores. The racks are pretty empty.

Or is it that their supply is dwindling? |

Seems like it has been Thursday, Friday, and Saturday as long as I can remember. Granted, their choices are low right now but I await the promised IHCs so I can have at least 2 of each USGI mfg. Also, DD214 satisfies marksmanship requirements. |

Is either the "Service Grade HRA Special" (RM1HRASSP) or the Springfield "CMP Special" (RM1SPECIAL) worth the extra $325 or $370, respectively, over the $625 Service Grade HRA (RM1HRAS)? http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/m1garand.htm I can only assume the Springfield CMP Special is going to be a better shooter due to the new barrel. But by the time they add a new production barrel, stock set, and miscellaneous hardware parts am I losing something by not getting a more authenticate service grade rifle?
If I (someone who has no M1 Garand knowledge) go to Anniston am I more or less likely to get a nicer rifle than the luck of the draw that they ship to me? |

Matthew, I went there and was completely over whelmed..... The only ones there on the shelves were either welded up ones or $999+. Very cool to see, but didn't have a clue where to start. Probably 15 or more people in there.
Would have been very nice to have someone there that could have helped. People behind the counter were very involved in their conversions..... Had $800 in my pocket and I left empty handed. |

Going to the store and picking one out is (normally) the best way to get a good one. However, right now the store has very little product to choose from, so I would suggest getting one of the specials. They are great rifles and eliminate two of the biggest wear areas - the barrel and stock. If you want something truly authentic, you'd want a correct grade, which they are out of, and run about 1200.
I wasn't positive about the CWL counting for marksmanship, so I just went to a range and shot while the rangemaster observed and checked off the list available on the CMP website saying I could safely and efficiently utilize a firearm. Didn't cost me anything other than range time. I went with the Garand Collectors Association, it's cheap, and the quarterly magazines are information gold mines. GSSF would be a good one too, but you have to be a member for two years, or buy two years worth of memberships, to get your blue label coupon, which gets you a net savings of like $40. |

They cut the hours back because there are so few rifles to put out in the stores. The racks are pretty empty. Is this because demand is higher than they can keep up with as they "refurbish" them? Or is it that their supply is dwindling? Both, essentially the CMP has crates upon crates of rifles returned from various countries. Most if not all of these crates are arsenal refurb rifles. The CMP inspects each rifle and if the rifle meets the criteria of Field/Service/rack/correct grade they sell it as is. Or they cannibilize the rifle to use the parts to build a rifle to meet the rack/field/correct grade rifle. Supply isn't essentially dwindling but the orders have outpaced what the CMP is finding in the crates. There are so many mail orders for service grade rifles they simply can't keep up. This is what there are very few if any service grade rifles making to the store shelves. And this is why they have cut back to a 3 day week. They are simply not finding enough rifles or components of rifles to fulfill both online orders and stocking the racks of both stores.
