Only spiders in Florida I personally give any thought to are brown recluses, and they're generally of little concern, as their name implies they're reclusive. My father *was* bitten by one on the leg, but it was a really freak incident, was riding in a friends truck and it crawled up his pant leg from under the seat. The rest of Florida's *native* spiders are harmless to humans for the most part, and beneficial in most cases since they prey on other nuisance insects.
That being said, yes there is something inherently creepy about them and no, I don't run around cuddling with them Steve Irwin style. I did have a pretty amazing Yellow Garden Spider living on my fence for a while. They prefer to live outside and help control all the other crap that makes meals of your garden plants. |

Put me in the ‘if it crawls, kill it !!1!” camp.

Brown Recluses are throughout the state of Florida though not native, thus the *native*. We have more recluses where I am than widows (at least I have seen more hiding in and around our shed). Fastest/easiest way to distinguish the bites is neurotoxin vs hemotoxin. My dad's bite started when he felt something crawling on his leg and swatted at it. about an hour later there was a raised red area, then the veins surrounding it became very pronounced/bulging over the next couple of hours, by the time the infectious disease doctor was done removing tissue, he had about a 1 inch deep x 3" diameter section removed from his calf.
He didn't have any symptoms from the bite until late in the evening, when it became painful. |

It's a yellow sack spider. Is your car by chance a Mazda6? Mazda issued a 50,000 vehicle safety recall do to spider infestation last year. And the yellow sack also has a fairly nasty venomous bite, so "steer" clear of them.
http://www.biodiversityexplorer.org/arachnids/spiders/images/bite7.jpg I didn't believe you on the recall... "It's unclear why this particular spider –– the yellow sac spider –– seems to prefer the model year 2009 and 2010 Mazda6, company spokesman Jeremy Barnes said. All modern cars have the same type of equipment. "Maybe they just like cars that go 'Zoom-Zoom'," he said. "We honestly don't know." " |

Quoted: I got bit about a week ago by what the doc believes to be a Brown Recluse. My entire calf was on fire around day 3. I'm on antibiotics. It's starting to feel a little better but man it sucks! http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/billyjack2011/AR/WP_000351.jpg That sucks - BIGTIME. I hope it turns out well for you, but sadly, Recluse bites seldom do. |

" haha...well you know when a certain demographic loves a vehicle they go crazy for it. Mazda should be happy those spiders bought 50,000 units! Yellow sac seems right, except he had a little orange red fangs....Typically I could care less about spiders since I know they're doing me a favor, but when you don't know what they are is what gets me. Like "oh i'm doing 75mph on the turnpike and it's crawling inside the truck....do I slow down and kill it or ignore it?" eta: it's an '11 Ford F-150 eco boost |

It still hasn't completely gone away. It's like there's a little piece of hard puss about 15mmx5mm just under the skin like a hard cyst or lipoma. I popped mine in a hotel room about a month after I got it and it shot white pus clear across the bathroom. |
