LONG ago I heard of a place in Nor Cal where they line up on either side of a long road through a valley and shoot the ever loving shit out of ground squirrels, hundreds upon hundreds of them.

Can't for the life of me recall where though, but the varmint hunter/long range shooter in me desperately wants to find out.

Yeah, it is.

If you want some info, call the Greater Surprise Valley Chamber of Commerce at (530) 279- 2001 and leave your info, stating that you'd like a flyer/info for the 2007 squirrel hunt.

The official 'hunt' is the weekend of March 23rd, and the only official event is the dinner (there was a raffle, too last year) that evening.

Last year, there was a sign-up sheet and you had to pay a fee to participate in the dinner and raffle.  The sign-up also ensured that you would be paired up with a rancher in the area.  This year, no fee and no sign-up.  I'm not exactly sure how those who have no contacts are supposed to find a willing ranch.

Like I said, though... call the number or send an email to [email protected].  Here's the email I got back from them, this year:

Dear Michael,  We will send you a letter as soon as we have more letters printed for the Squirrel Hunt on March 24th, 2007.  You do not have to register  this year.  Just  come to our dinner on Saturday at 6:00 pm.  Thank you - Karen Surprise Valley Chamber

is there anywhere in the bay area to shoot 'em?

Private land... ranches at least a mile off the main road after getting permission from the owners.

From what I've heard, the closest 'hunting' land would be the Panoche Hills, which are 50mi outside the real 'bay area'.
