Is it illegal to kill a squirrel with a pellet/BB gun in my backyard?
I've tried that spray crap that they sell at home depot but the damn things keep fucking with my garden and driving my dogs crazy. |

Probably yes inside the city limits.
They also like to get in your attic and chew on wires. They will take out small wires first like doorbell, alarm and telephone wires. They will then move onto larger wires will they will probably electrocute themselves and may start a fire. Squirrels are also game animals. I spoke to a Game Warden about this who said he didn't have a problem with killing squirrels that were being destructive. He DID NOT want me to catch the squirrels in a live trap and relocate them. YMMV |

YMMV They like to get on our transformers and fry themselves all the time around here. Its pretty amazing what 7200 volts will do to a living thing. We have an average of 3 outages a week due to squirrels blowing the transformer fuses. |

| The house and attic damage is for real. If i may suggest, try setting up snares around your garden on paths the squirrels travel, like fence tops. My favorite is to lean posts laden with wire snare hoops against trees and fences as they like to take easy angles to run up on. Its also kind of fun to get some silent payback on the little bastards, and most importantly, you can teach your kids some skilz. |

Sure is a good thing you didn't go out and buy a 22 cal Benjamin air rifle to secretly shoot those things in your backyard while no one was watching. I'm sure you can contact your local animal control and they'll have a bunch of things that supposedly work.

If you are unable to shoot a pellet gun in your yard, I would suggest a Havahart trap, some raw peanuts and a big bucket of water. I would not relocate the squirrel and just give the problem to someone else.
Others would say to take the screen off of a window and snipe the offending squirrels from the comfort of your kitchen table, desk, etc. Just don't do it in front of your neighbors or the cops. If shooting from inside through open door, make sure you are clear of the trim beside the door. It does not always appear on scope.

I've shot a BB gun in my backyard before, but I think that my living in Austin will negate my taking care of the squirrels lethally |

You wouldn't want the injured squirrel to crawl or fall in your neighbor's yard and then die. I have seen pellets shot from a cheap Gamo bounce off squirrels. If you are careful, your neighbors will never know. |

This past 18 July in Frankfurt, Germany, a squirrel gnawed through the overhead power lines resulting in over 200 trains and thousands of travelers being delayed for hours; a few of the German newspapers printed photos of the burnt squirrel which had been electrocuted.

| Victor Rat Traps are a buck or two at Home Depot. Get the old school wooden plank type with a spring snap. Works like a charm on problem squirrels. You can actually just nail the trap to the tree limb, put some peanut butter on there. Problem will solve itself in a day or three. |
| You may try to feel out your neighbors first. If you are having problems they may be having them too and be happy to see the squirrels killed no matter how you do it. If they aren't all that keen on it, then go with the various traps. Even if I trapped them, I'd still kill them instead of releasing them somewhere else. It's a rat with a bushy tail and they seem to breed like rats so the fewer there are the better. They've caused all kinds of damage to my dad's house, even some water leaks after they chewed their way in to the second floor and made a home in the attic. I kill them when I can at my house as they like to tease my dog and make a mess out of the mulch I have around the trees and plant beds. They also destroy my pear tree and my neighbors peach tree so my neighbors are all for killing them when they come around. |
