i was told by someone who probably doesn't know but since i may be a first-time hunter(if i'm invited!) i want to be sure: can you hunt deer w/an AR that has a flash hider?
sounds stupid to me but since i've never hunted i'm not up on the latest regs. tia michael |

Unlike a lot of other states there is also no minimum caliber or maximum magazine capacity for hunting deer in Texas. All that said, a .223 Rem/5.56x45 NATO AR wouldn't be my first choice for deer hunting... but there is no legal reason I know of that I couldn't use one in Texas. Other states may be different. |

Yes you can have a flash hider on your AR and hunt deer.

I have killed a few deer with the 5.56 55gn hornady tap fpd round
it is a great round and does an awsome job. Some may tell you it wounds and won't penetrate. That is not true. It goes in about 4" and explodes like a bomb. Damage is the same as "real deer rifles" like the 270 or 243. You won't be under gunned in the least. But you must score a good hit in the chest. But then I have tracked gut shot deer hit with 300 winmags 45-70 and other "deer rifles". So take it, let them razz you for it and show them how it fell in it's tracks while you have to track their deer because the flinched and pulled their shot. Ed to say it's all about the round. FMJ may wound. HP may not open but a self defence round will kill. |

. . .But you must score a good hit in the chest. . . . I'd avoid the shoulder shot with a 5.56 and go for the rib cage. the scapula and humerus of Texas size white tail deer are no match for a 223 round. They blow right thru. You will damage the meat and maybe lose the whole arm so I would avoid the shot for that reason. |

I would further suggest that you not head out into the woods/plains/wherever until you have at least acquired a 2009-2010 Outdoor Annual (they're free wherever hunting gear is sold) and familiarized yourself with the relevant hunting regulations it contains. There are things in there you might not even think to ask about. You can get some good advice here, but relying on info from strangers on the internet to keep you out of hot water with law enforcement is never a wise approach. In fact, as you can now see, relying on information from people you DO know isn't all that good an idea either. |
