I'm thinking of building a varmit rifle. It will be my first build, and I was wondering if there is a difference in the quality of receivers. Is a RRA($130.) the same as a Del-ton($78.)? What brand would you suggest? |
Contact Chuck. He may know of one REALLY cheap. It may need a little work though. I'd say RRA would give a more assurance of having a good one. But that chance of getting a bad one from Del-ton probably is pretty remote too. Resale value would be much better on the RRA if you decide to sell it down the road. Recovering your expenses if you don't like is always a big consideration when building a rifle. |
Listen to Josh if you want to build a really accurate AR. I've seen some really accurate ARs he''s built. He's awful particular about building them and knows what's he's talking about. |
I know where there is a slightly used Stag ![]() I just put together a Del-ton kit on a DPMS lower. Scoped it too. Its at least as accurate as I am. I'll probably get another one for one of my other lowers. They are perfectly fine for us hard working men. We're not rolling in money like some rich old retirees(Dan) or Military guys (Josh). ![]() ![]() |
A scoped AR doesn't cut it for me. I had a Colt Elite with a SS 10x42 on it. It wasn't any fun to shoot. I always hit what I was shooting at. Josh is just damned serious about his scoped rifles. He wants only the best. And does the best he can with them. And you pay for it when you want the best. If you want 1 MOA, you'll get by a lot cheaper than wanting 1/2 MOA. |
Is this the one www.adcofirearms.com/acc/ProductLine_.cfm?product_category=Upper%20Receivers/Parts&subcategory=5.56%20Upper%20Receivers Thanks for the advice |
Yep. He sells them for $110 I see. I'll match that price if you wanted to get it from me, but I don't have any in stock and would have to order it. |
Sounds good to me, might as well spend my money in OK. If you'll order it I'll buy it from you. |
|
I tried to send you a PM but you aren't accepting them... I forgot about this but I have a WOA upper with standard feed ramps that is basically brand new. I had assembled an upper as a backup upper for a class I was attending and shot 10 rounds just to function test it and never used it. I recently took it apart to get the handguards that were on it and use it on another build. I'll sell you that one for $100 even if you want that one. |
| That sounds good to me. I don't know why the PM's don't work for me, but you can call me @ 485-3477. I work in OKC and could pick it up one day after 5:00 if that's OK with you. My cell is 488-8500, you'll have to leave a message. I don't carry it on me very often. |
Bring me about 5 different lowers and 12 different uppers, 3000 rounds of ammo, and I'll make a scientific study to find out what is true. Damn, the sacrifices I'm willing to make for you guys. |
I have used Del-Ton uppers to put together about 12 rifles to date, no problem from any of them. I am a sceptic when it comes to the AR VOODO that I read here...but who knows. I just bought a factory COLT A3 upper ...holy of holy Colt, standard by which all else are measured....blah blah blah....long story short, I am not impressed, the Del-ton parts look better, this Colt looks like it was carved on by a drug addicted Monkey....take all the advice for what it is worth. If you want a "Match Gun" get a bolt action HB....otherwise save your bucks and go with a reputable vendor, most of which advertise here. I also like brightflashlights.com for accessories (if you need a red dot for that thing).. |

It all comes from the hammer hitting the firing pin in the same spot giving the same igntion giving the same chamber pressure giving the same barrel vibrations, shot after shot, with good, consistent ammo. Yes, a tight fit does make a difference. Not that much, but it shows at longer distances and in the larger number of shots fired. Three shots, can't tell the difference. 100 shots, you will. |
Obviously if it is really sloppy then you MIGHT see a difference, but getting a "matched" pair is not necessary. Every upper is going to fit different even if they are from the same manufacture. If he needs to use a tensioning pin to actually improve his groups I would scrap the upper and lower and build something using better parts that fit well without having to do anything to it. Most people can't shoot well enough to see a difference anyway. |
Anytime you wanna go out there, Brother L. let me know. Hell, we might even get Wingman to show up. |
well I ain't no expert riflemen like ya'll, but I've pulled the trigger on a gun once or twice, besides I've never been to a range nicer any than lex and been wondering if they're all that much better |
You bring the gun you've killed the most with, I'll bring mine. No kidding, I'm afraid to see what you're bringing! ![]() After seeing the last rifle you had out there, I know I ain't in your league. ![]() Ndenway, you and I both like rifles and ain't too shabby with them. But Josh leaves and breathes precision rifles. ![]() As far as ARs go, I'd say he's pretty much THE expert around here when it comes to knowing which components to use. Brother L, we may have to get some real practice in to keep up with Josh. With pistols, he's gotten much better after I have him a thumping. He thumped me pretty good last time and I want REVENGE on the plates this time.
|
OK, let's shoot tomorrow and bet money on it. ![]() Before you get the scope on it, of course. WTH kind of rig is that anyway? ![]() It's that your old rig worked over or a new one? |
|
Nope it's a totally new stick. Specs... Surgeon Rifles Tactical Action in .308win with KMW/Terry Cross knob Hart SS Match barrel cut to 18 inches and fluted and threaded Manners MCS-T stock with flush cups and badger rail up front for the bipod Timney trigger and Rifle Basix safety Badger mag system/bottom metal Harris bipod with LaRue bipod mount OD Green Cerakote SWR Omega suppressor I can't afford nice glass for it but I have some GG&G Aluminum Sniper rings Cerakoted to match waiting for it. I might throw a Millett TRS-2 on it for now. But putting a $250 scope on a $4k rifle makes me feel a little dirty. |
