In a few weeks I'll be at Dillon Aero again to sit in on one of their 3-day training courses at their Scottsdale facility and also their desert firing range, but this time I'll be driving rather than flying to Phoenix as I did the past few times I sat in on their classes. Can anyone recommend any good nearby areas to explore off the paved roads in a moderately lifted 4x4 with lockers and recovery gear, particularly east on my way back to the Lone Star state? |

Quoted:
coke ovens near Florence rough trail to get to the coke ovens Starting at Florence Box Canyon, then possibly Martinez, end on Picket Post at Superior. Martinez has claimed many oil pans and axles, it is a diversion trail so you can skip it, but it is one hell of a nice place to miss. I hope you're bringing a Jeep and GPS. |

I have a stock 4X4 with taller than stock tires, 295/70-17. Box Canyon is great if you have a spotter, without I think it would suck. Went to Martinez in '98 and that was nice, tried again a few years ago and gave up less than halfway there. Had gotten much rougher. The trail up to Rogers Trough is nice but I haven't been up there in a while. I recall some decent wheeling, for my anyway, up around Ajax Mine. There is a lot in the area just to the east off of US60 between Apache Junction and Superior.
What part of TX are you from? As a Texan, DFW area, I am amazed by AZ. You just drive an hour so out of town and you have nice places to shoot, picnic, explore, go 4wheeling, etc. When out on trail just watch out for the quads. They like to go out too. Most I've seen were pretty courteous but some seen to think they out desert and will give you a dirty look for being in their way. Every group has their assholes. Just like the firearms crowd. You will likely see some shooting spots just full of crap, such as refrigerator I recall somewhere. Have fun, be careful, and get cool pics Jester |

Thanks for the replies. I'm from the DFW metroplex. I will most likely be in a Jeep YJ with only moderate 2.5" suspension lift and 32" tires, so I'm not looking for anything too serious (e.g. no rock crawling), just some roads and back areas to explore. I'll definitely have a GPS, as I'm looking for places/diversions such as this the entire way back to north Texas so I can explore and possibly hike/camp. |

Montana Mountain trail is a loop off the 60 near Superior. You should have no problem in your rig. Harder to get lost. There is an endless amount of trails out here. Check out Youtube to see what they are like. I probably don't have to say this.....bring a shitload of water in case of an extended stay, most trails have nasty drops, watch for open mines, Verizon has the best coverage when cell phones work, make sure you let someone know where you are going in case you need to be searched for, and don't die. |

From this Arizona 4-Wheeling trails website, I found descriptions of several light/easy trails similar to what I'm seeking:
