i figured i could sneak by without taking hunters' safety. but, alas, there are other states that don't have a veterans exemption and i'm hoping to get a lifetime lisence in the states i'll meet the requirements in.

so i was looking at the OK safety classes and it looks like i'll be going to ponca city the 3rd and 4th of march.

i know broken arrow is closer, but i'd rather pull my fingernails than drive through tulsa on a weekend. ponca city is only an extra 15 minutes and i'll be much happier when i get there.

what should i expect to bring?

no doze if it's anything like the one i went to in TX so i could hunt AR you gotta be an antique not to need one in AR and a few other states.......

The video on the dumb ass people getting hypothermia was pretty funny ....... that was worth watching for entertainment value

And the video demonstration that showed a 30-30 shot into a 1gln bucket of sand vs a cmpnd bow shot into one....... that one suprised all of the kids and most of the adults.

How did you find out when/where they give the classes??? i still need to take a bwhntrs safety course so i can hunt some stupid ass state my hunting partner want's to go to.

Who's "an antique"?
When I went to CO to hunt elk, they said I had to have a Hunter Safey number when i went to buy a tag. I showed them my Hunter Safety Instructor's ID and they said that wouldn't work and wasn't acceptable.  The next place I went to laughed about the other store while they were taking my money and issuing my tag.
If you are born after 1949 in Colorado, you have to have the Hunter Safety certification.
So I guess I'm not one of those antiques.

I guess I'm way behind the curve here, since when did OK start requirering a hunters safety course before issuing licenses?

I guess I got my lifetimes long enough ago that I didn't need to take one first.

Anyone born after 1971 has to have a Hunter Safety Course to buy a hunting license in Oklahoma. I guess you are an original Oklahoma antique!

i don't need it in OK because of the military exeption. but while doing my army shit, i'll meet a residency requirement for another state, so i'm thinking about trying to get a lifetime lisence there...

I was born in 1970 AND I am a veteran.  So, if I am reading this right, it means I will not need to get a hunter's safety card to hunt in OK, right?  Even though I am not a native?

Correct, but once you establish your OK residenance, you wil need to get a OK hunting/fishing license, unless you are hunting or fishing on your own land, then all you would need are deer tags, turkey tags unless you have a Lifetime license, then you get those for free.

How long do you have to be a resident for a lifetime license?

I plan on spending every moment of free time hunting once I get this leg under control.

Speaking of hunting licenses take a look at this bill and tell me what you think.

I just saw this today.

HB 1042, as amended, by Rep. Glen Bud Smithson, D-Sallisaw, and Wyrick, requires hunters 35 years or younger to possess and exhibit a certificate of competency and safety in the use of firearms. A hunter younger than 16 hunting small game would be exempt from the requirements if they are accompanied by a licensed hunter age 21 or older. Hunters aged 16 to 35 with certification in hunter safety could receive a hunting license or permit with the designation of "apprentice" and would be required to be accompanied by a licensed hunter 21 years of age or older. The House unanimously adopted an amendment by Rep. James Covey, D-Custer City, to page 3, line 12, replacing "a duplicate" with "renew their." The House then passed the bill, as amended, and its emergency clause in a vote of 100 to 0.

Ok.  After reading the actual bill I believe there was an error in the report I cut and pasted here. The report stated:  "Hunters aged 16 to 35 with certification in hunter safety could receive a hunting license or permit with the designation of "apprentice" and would be required to be accompanied by a licensed hunter 21 years of age or older. "

The bill says:  "Persons sixteen (16) years of age through thirty-five (35) years of age who do not possess a certificate of hunter safety may purchase or receive any hunting license or permit with the designation “apprentice” listed on the hunter education line of the license or permit."

The report came from okinsider.com I believe it should have said "Hunters aged 16 to 35 WITHOUT certification" kind of changes the meaning a bit.

There are still some things about this bill I don't like such as if you are hunting big game with an "apprentice" you must be within arms reach at all times so you can take control of the firearm or archery equipment if they do something unsafe.  h
