Ordered a Radius today. That deal was too good to pass up.
Give the laziest man the hardest job and he will find the easiest way to do it.

Agreed - at $470 it was too good to pass up
Ordered one yesterday.

Note that it does not come with lens covers.
They are available for $2.00 a pair from SilencerCo with free shipping.

Thank you again Defender3 for all your insight in this thread.

Well, it’s probably still winter up in WI!  I am running out of stuff to post, heck, I may have to start reloading just for something to keep the thread alive.

Give us a range report when you are able to get out and I have to say I’m jealous knowing you’re going to be training at 500!

I’m still a bit ticked to see the Radius at that price.

Second verse, same as the first?  Nope, totally different experience at Quantico today.  Was it fun, of course, a bit frustrating, but filled with positives.  I started off by filling the truck with every conceivable accoutrement, you know, just in case you might need them, but for some reason I forgot my small range bag with chamber flags and my larger rear bag.

The weather was different from the first Quantico trip being cloudy and in the 40’s, high humidity and what were originally light winds, picked up across the target line.  The temps climbed into the low 60’s and the sun peaked out a bit, but it was overcast for the session.

We were scheduled to shoot a couple of strings at 800y and then move back to 1000y, but range control had other ideas.  We fired our first strings and went down to check targets and make adjustments.  When we got back to the line, range control told us we had an hour until they were calling it a day.  I guess there were no Marine units shooting on the other ranges, or the guys had hot lunch dates!  No matter, it was still range time but it did disrupt the rythum of what I had planned. No big deal, just another planning factor.

I actually met another member of the ARF team and a guy who’s following and contributed to the .260 thread!  We spoke about the .260, what he was shooting for the day and he let me sit behind his rifle and look through his Vortex Gen II HD – I’ve got the itch again.

Some impressions for the day:

I greatly dislike the wind, it is the debil.  We had light winds crossing the line and sometimes at our face, but it was moving 10-15mph down at the target line and who knows what it was doing at different points on the range.

Shooting at 800 is exponentially more difficult than shooting at 600.  It seemed to be so easy at 600, but it was soooooo hard at 800.  Very few hits at 800; I was all around the steel, but not the number of hits my ego desired.

Having a spotter is good.  The guy next to me was not doing well with his 03A4 and Mosin so I spotted for him so he could get dialed in.  It took a while to get him on target, but once he was, he simply had to determine his holds as he did not have fine adjustments on his optics.  I believe he said the subtention on his 03A4 clone was 3MOA.

I was hitting high but did not know how high I was striking.  I thought I was closer on target than I was and could have dialed down ½ to  ¾ MOA, but I didn’t and was using holds for elevation and wind.  Bad call on elevation, I should have dialed it in.  As to the wind, it was sporty.  I’d call a shot that was just to the right and do a hold over, then fire the next and be 10 inches further right.  I did not get much better at my wind calls during the session. Sporty wind, debil wind, sporty wind was the debil.

My gear is working well but I think I’m going to a larger steel plate so I have a higher probability of hits.

ETA - I found a 2/3 IPSC silhouette, AR500 3/8 steel and ordered.  $80 shipped and I assure you I'll be building a 2x4 stand.

I had no issues with the Prime, Hornady or the FGMM, and I had no popped primers.

I did chrono the Prime Hornady and FGMM again using the LabRadar, but I've not pulled the data.  It was at the end of the session so I was basically firing a string and ensuring I was capturing the MVs.

The trip always starts the same, heading up 95 north the few miles it takes to get to Quantico.

Scum sucking Ted Kennedy managed to get the American taxpayer to dig a $3B hole under Boston but here in the Commonwealth we have private toll lanes, $4.30 to drive the express lanes on a Sunday no-less.  I drive these same roads M-F and let’s just say it’s damn expensive to bypass traffic to have a decent commute.  [/semi-rant off]

At the Quantico exit and then onto the access road.

Take a left here and you're at the FBI National Academy.

It’s a short way to the access gate to the MCB Quantico. The base is huge (well, at least for east coast bases).  I believe there is 10 miles of clear zone behind the 1,000y range and the MCB with all its ranges is something like 90sq miles.

Passing the QSC:

Waiting at Gate 7 for access to the line to place targets.

Gratuitous picture of the berm and growth.  It got me wondering if they excavated the range to build the berms, which means they moved an awful lot of dirt.

We were at the 800y line, but only six of us were shooting.  A variety of rifles including 5.56, 6.5CM, .308, 300WM, and the guy next to me shooting a 1903A4 clone and a Mosin sniper.

Looking back at 1,000.  Once we set up, we move our vehicles back to the parking behind 1,000.

It’s still a long way to the pits.

Kit all setup.  The grounds were still pretty wet from rains so the tarp was a good touch.

Dillo looking over notes:

I bought a 10” Viking Solution gong to use.  Most everyone else had nice setups using 2x4s and one guy had a homemade steel pipe holder for his steel that was really nice.  Here are two hits on steel with the third passing over the top.

We were at a known range of 800 yards.  I used the Radius to shoot a distance to the gong and it came back at 797y, which was probably spot on as the pits were probably 6-9 feet further back from where I set the gong.  I was hoping to use it at 1,000, but we were booted from the range before we could move back.  Sorry for the picture but the iPhone just wasn’t capturing the screen in the outdoor conditions.

Ha, now I know why everyone was shooting using 2x4s.  I have tons of wood so I know what I’ll be doing before the next trip.  I’ll also see if I can order a small silhouette so I have some additional area to gauge hits.  Not having a spotter was also difficult as sometimes you just can’t see every shot.  Clearly I was shooting high, and the wind was killing me.

Okay sports fans, I'm running out of stuff to post so it could get inventive until we can get some additional range reports coming in from the field!

So if i read this correctly the jp hp bolt performed well in the 260 and you will be sticking with it?  i have a bunch of larues and am more than willing to run a jp bolt and firing pin if it keeps the primers in the brass on the prime ammo. as i now have 4 cases that i need to get shooting up.

i was hoping to have my 2 tranquillos this weekend but instead i think the dealer messed up the paperwork and the wait will be starting with a post 41f new trust.so at this point there is no need to wait any longer it's time to get shooting the loud old fashoned way.

thanks for the great post so far and i too ordered up a rangfinder,im a sucker for a sale, off to find a deal on a jp bolt,i can keep the spare larue bolt for one of the 308's

defender thanks for posting all the great info.

Nope, I made a late call to stick with the LaRue bolt.  With over 400rds on the bolt and extension, and them wearing together, I decided to keep the JP HP for my 6.5CM project.  I know 400rds is really nothing on a bolt, but that's the call I made. Sorry if I gave the impression I went with the JP.  Again, no brass or primer issues with the LaRue bolt on this trip.

Sorry to hear your dealer fubar'd your paperwork.  It just stinks to have to wait soooooooo long for something like a suppressor.

My 6.5CM project is back on the plate.  I have a LaRue field grade 308 barrel (obviously with a LaRue barrel extension) and was thinking of sending it to Craddock Precision, along with my Krieger barrel, to be barreled for my tOBR. Craddock can do that, or they can turn a BAT extension to fit the tOBR.  I just have to make my mind up as to direction.  I can't wait the two weeks for Mark to make a sparrel, which is like washing your car, as soon as I do it, Mark will release a sparrel in 6.5CM.

At this point I'd be surprised if he released a 6.5. It took him this long to sell .260s and they were only to guys that bought a rifle. I'd say you'd be fine.

The X type rebar hangers are able to take a lot of hits but the weight really is not fun to deal with while transporting them. So I think you are right on with the 2x4.

I enjoy all the posts it gets me pumped to get my barrel, some day.

Looks like a great day to shoot. 2x4 posts staked to the ground work well for target holders, however I like having the gong stand made up of AR500 steel. Cuts down on a little weight and bulk for moving around. Wish I had access to a range like that vs having to deal with going out to the desert.

I was stationed at Luke AFB back in the days when "Phoenix" only extended out to 99th.  I lived in Goodyear and it was so easy to just drive out in the desert and pick a spot to shoot.  What I didn't like was the heat.

Today's update is not nearly as exciting, I've decided to increase my cool factor by rebarreling the bolt gun to .260. I have a Krieger 5R barrel that I'll have chambered in .260 at 24". The only question I haven't solved is the amount of freebore I want when the chamber is cut. If anyone has a suggestion, please chime in.

The rifle is a Mausingfield M5 in 308.

Remove the scope and spare rounds:

Then remove two screws from the JAE-700 and the action pops out.  A couple of pins later the trigger group is out and it was boxed up and sent to LRI for the rebarrel.  The nice thing about having a company FedEx account is the savings you get on shipping, 21lb package overnight with $1900 in insurance was $34.    D3 probably out for a bit unless I think of something else to post that's LaRue .260 related.

He is shooting a lot of 6 and 6.5 stuff and I think he has done something like 7 million barrels(not really)

This PTG guy you speak of just may know as well

I have started to gear up, got my dies and such. Waiting on primers to come in stock.

Do any of you guys shoot factory loads, or is everyone reloading?  I'm not quite there yet, and looking for a long range hunting load. While looking came across 127gr Barnes LRX, and also 142 accubonds from Doubletap that looks good on paper for what I need and was wondering if anyone has any experience with their loads.

I'm shooting factory right now, but match ammo, not any hunting rounds.

Buy some, give them a try and report back.

Probably will give both a try.  Picking up my FDE this week and hopefully the 260 barrel will soon follow.

This is the best I can do for today's update.  Silly me was thinking I would be killing that steel and needing some replacement stickers, and Viking was nice enough to sell me a hoop of replacements.  With the way I was shooting Sunday, I think these could last a looooong time.    Second was the arrival of another JP HP bolt.  This one will be used for the 6.5CM barrel I'll be having spun up for the tOBR.

The insurance adjuster is arriving at the estate tomorrow as we got hammered by hail back in February; shingles, siding, gutters, leaf guards and fascias are all damaged (cars too unfortunately). Since I have to take a day off to work with the contractor and adjuster, it may give me some time to either head to the 100y range to shoot some bug holes or weigh some of the Lapua versus the Alpha brass.

I'm interested to see your results on the Alpha brass. I've been using Lapua with no complaints, it's very consistent from what I can tell. I've had an ES of .8 grains out of the 50 I weighed from 5 different boxes.

I'm poor and can't afford one of the nicer LaRue rifles. I can't shoot for shit but sometimes I get lucky. I just want to shoot one of the 260's.

I was tied up yesterday with the housing adjuster and contractor.  By the time they left I decided to just mow the lawn and try and plan some cable runs for some Cat 7.  Probably the wrong decision as it's going to rain for the next three days, but at least I can plan the runs and maybe pull the cables on Saturday.  Between now and then, I'll make some time to weigh the brass.

The estate needs a new roof, siding, gutters and fascias, and the fence was damaged also. The out buildings survived as did the outside AC unit. We were in the heart of the storm and took a beating.  According to the insurance folks, there were 4000 houses and 2000 cars damaged.  I thought they used fancy thermals or some other electronic marvel, but no, they used plain old Mark 1 eyeballs. This will be interesting since the house has aluminum siding that can't be replaced as it's no longer made.

That's some nice shooting, you sandbagger.    If you, or anyone for that matter, gets to NoVA, you're welcome to shoot anything in the stable, look through the optics, play with the laser, etc., etc.

I still dislike the wind.  If it was steady so you had consistency in your holds that would be one thing, but when it's gusting and varying across the range it just made it hard for me to gauge.  But heck, getting out and shooting more will help cure that whining, as well as a larger steel plate.

Made it out to the range for a bit this morning.  Gun performed great, but had a little bit of a hard time getting comfortable behind it today.  My cheek weld did not feel right and it's been at least six months since I've shot in just a tee shirt.  34 rounds today.  Bottom target (splatter) is a 10 shot grouping (played with the elevation on the scope slightly during the 10 shots) and the LaRue targets are all 3 shot groupings.  All shots were taken prone, with bipod and a rear bag at 100 yds.  Used Prime ammo, ejecting right about 3 o'clock and also posting a picture of the spent round's primers.  I'm looking forward to a week from Monday taking it out to 500 yds.

Looks like your rifle is a shoot Skokie.  I ordered a CTR w/RISR along with my barrel for the reason you point out. With RAT stock works on a 556, I can't line up right with them on a 762.  I'll let you know how it works out when I get it all together.

Reading wind and understanding its impact on ballistics is black magic.  Best us mortals can do is practice a lot and learn how to 'read' what happens in various situations.  Angle, speed, changing velocity,....and the list goes on. the other thing we can do is effectively control that other variables, which we are doing with the high BC bullets available, good optics, and consistent loads.

I'm not a target shooter, but from time to time get the opportunity to let some fly when I'm out West.  I've got to the point that with good data..including a hand held wind and gauge and somewhat consistent wind, a decent spotter, and scope that was dials customized for the load, and good ranging and ballistic software, hitting at long range is possible.  But like you said, if the wind is swirling or inconsistent, anything over 500 yards is exponentially harder with each 100 yards of distance.

One of the guys at camp has a G7 rangefinder and matched scope.  He shoots a 7mm bolt gun and has killed Elk over 800 and has hit a milk jug over a mile away.  His setup like a champ with no wind It all about the guy on the trigger.  Gunwerks uses a customized Nightforce scope in their LR package.  Leupold custom shop will do a turret for about 70 bucks customized to you specific load, which should give the same result.

In addition to being a great rangefinder, they have solid software built right in and outputs info in mil, mrad, and or MOA. They do provide a wind hold as well, in 5 mph increments that do work, but still when the wind is blowing hard and inconsistent, even the best limit their shots to 400 yards.  Give them a last calm bluebird day, and nothing under 1000 yards is safe.

I know there has been a push for the rail mounted range finders, but if you really want a tool that I believe is on of the best on the market for complete firing solutions, the G7 ifits the bill.  It isn't magic and can't do anything for unknown variables like swirling.  However if you are looking for a compl t ballistic solution tool, this is the one.  At least it will eliminate the other variables allowing you to work on you wind magic knowing ups nd down you ar spot on.

Excellent that you were able to get out a put some rounds downrange, and in a t-shirt no less!  Weather here has been raining so I've been pulling Cat7 from the basement to the attic and then down into the bedrooms. I also won't be getting any range time soon so thanks for keeping the thread alive with a great range report!

I see you had some primer flow but it doesn't look bad at all.  Standing by for the 500 yard report.

Sorry guys, I wasn't able to weigh the Alpha and Lapua brass this weekend as I had hoped. I was busy installing a new TV to replace my dying XBR, running Cat7 and looking through the basement for something the cat carried inside.  I combined the Sony 900e with a Zvox 570 sound bar and I really am enjoying the upgrades!  I also spent the last two days pulling out old Cat5 from the attic that was run years ago.  I ran four CAT7 cables from the basement to the attic and then two in the main bedroom, one to the wife's spare room and one to a Ubiquiti UniFi Pro Access Point. I've been having problems getting decent WiFi throughout the house so I decided to go nuclear with the Ubiquiti.  I finished that project this morning and now I'm driving myself crazy trying find the animal the cat dragged to the basement, which then crawled away somewhere and died.

The cabling I removed from the attic.  I needed to hardwire the new TV so I can get a consistent 4K stream and decided to cleanup this old stuff, and then run some flat CAT7 to future proof and since pulling four was the same headache as pulling one.

I installed a second drop to a HP Intellijack so now I have the benefit of an unmanaged switch in the bedroom to handle the computers, printers, etc.

I'll get back to .260 stuff as soon as I can.

I received my package from Midway today that included a couple of Wilson gauges and a box of .260 Gorilla ammunition.  The Gorilla is supposedly optimized for AR platforms and this match variant is loaded with a 130gr Berger hybrid. I hope to get it out to the range and do some accuracy testing as well as MVs.  The brass is annealed and the OAL is well within the capabilities of the magazine.

Does anyone have experience with the 130gr Bergers?  I'm interested if these come in better at longer ranges rather than trying to group at 100 yards.  TIA.

In today's social update, I'll be at Quantico tomorrow to be certified as an RSO.  I'm already a NRA RSO but the Marines have their own rules and course to be able to RSO on their ranges.  Interesting is their course includes airspace and maritime, overhead fire, mortars, arty, AT-4s, etc., etc.  I took the 4hr online pre-course and it was intense.  Distance X, area B, batwing, Angle Q, my gosh, a lot more than I expected.  In true Marine fashion (speaking as an AF guy), I take the pre-test at 0900 and if I pass, then I take the RSO course as 1300.
