Have been trying to think if ever eaten at The Automat
ETA: long before blacks were allowed to use a southern white bathroom, The Automat served everyone, every age and every color. All ate side by side waaaay before desegregation and no one complained. The owners had cash reserves for their employees in financial trouble... high loyalty For 60 of their 90 years they thrived, everyone ate there from film to politics to statesmen, are in countless movies. Only 2 towns had the originals. Did not know: they specialized in outstanding fresh food, variety & the best coffee in NYC and Philly, were the largest chain in country for years. It made McDonalds look like wet sandpaper by every account. Unsure if we had a small or unauthorized version Last one closed from NYC in 1991  |
