Welcome to ARFCOM! My FFL has a rifle as you describe and I was amazed when I saw it. He says it came that way. It's s/n is before the AR-15A2 I have and mine is all A2 configuration including the upper reciever.

Sounds like a "Transitional Model" to me for lack of better terms. I could be wrong, have been before, will be again.

Hi guys.

The very first runs of the AR15a2 were made with the original type upper and lower receivers with the a2 weight barrel and furniture added. This was because Colt was sending all the a2 uppers it could produce to it's .gov contract. It wasn't until the later years of a2 production they got around to putting a true a2 upper receiver on the gun. But the lower receiver still didn't have the front push pin or mag fence.

Then came the "Blue Label" guns where they were switching the features of the lower receiver around.

Your welcome.

I think you need to recheck your numbers. AR15a2's were produced until around '82-'83, I think it was. I'm betting you left out a digit. Look on the chart again and include the prefix letters, should be SPxxxxxx.

For example my Blue Label R6601 (Sporter Match HBAR) has the serial number SP249xxx. I bought it new in 1990 just as soon as Colt resumed production minus the AR15 name and bayo lug.

Sounds like a pretty standard R6500.  When Colt started to mark guns as A2s, they didn't include every A2 feature.  Many guns, such as yours, just had one or two of them (like a shell deflector or forward assist).
The R6550 would be the gun similar to yours with the A2 sights.

I dont have any of that information, but you could just about count on it being from 1984-1989.

I have a COLT that is similar. A1 upper with A2 barrel and hand guards.  No deflector.  I wrote COLT a letter and they replied that, by serial #, the rifle was produced in 1989.

Anything is possible, but that sounds more like a gun that a previous owner mixed and matched his own preference of parts on.
