Have the handguards on 2 of my carbines.... I like how they feel in the hand with the exception of being a bit smoother then what I would consider ideal.

Has anyone experimented with a way to put some texture on them?  Rubber, Skateboard tape or...?

Look in the refinishing forum. There is a sticky about heat stippling a polymer. There is a guy who did it on some pmags so I assume it would work on the handguards. I am seriously considering doing this as well.

Hrm, Hadn't thought about stippling.......

I found this after I posted http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1230/Product/_INSTA_GRIP_

The stippling sounds like a better move though.... or if a spray on texture exists... that would be nice.

This stuff is cheap, grippy and isn't going to come off unless you take it off.

I use a waffle shaped tip to texture my PMAGS. Texture is extremely aggressive. You would be hard pressed to drop or have one of these
mags ripped from your hand.
