I've been pinching pennies for a while with the desire of picking one up. The issue I'm having is my glass, it's just a Nikon Prostaff on cheap mounts. I haven't had any zero problems to date and I'm wondering if I'm scratching a phantom itch. It will be a year or so before I can afford really good glass to go with it.
Are there smarter purchases or is this just as good a place to start as any? |

I'm looking to pickup a LT-104 scope mount. I had originally included that in the title but took it out later. So, the actual question is: Is a scope mount a good place to start with when tweaking a rifle? |

You can not go wrong with an LT104! Worth every penny!

| Larue mounts is all I would buy. One lesson that I hate learning is you get what you pay for. I have Larue mounts on my Aimpoint, PVS-14, and my Nikon Buckmaster. Have intentions on getting one of their rifles just have too many wants to satisfy at the moment. Its nice to have nice things. |
| If it makes you feel any better I am in the same situations as you and will order a LT104 tomorrow and the scope that is going in it is a 60 dollar centerpoint until I save up enough for some nice glass. I figure there will be some advancements in glass/reticules but the mount is timeless. |

I have learned that as hard as it might be, dont start saving just to buy something cheaper or mid-priced before you have enough money to buy quality and what you really want. A quality gun will only shoot as good as the person behind it, and the person behind it can only do so much with cheap optics and mounts. You cannot go wrong with anything LaRue, and their mounts are the absolute best out there.
If you decide to purchase something else as far as optics later, you can always sell your LaRue mount if you need something different. There are lots of people who recognize the quality of the product and the company, getting most of your money back for a different mount shouldnt be an issue. Dont settle for less just because you have to pay initially for quality. It will save you money in the end. |

If you're asking 'should I buy a new scope mount or something else to improve my rifle?', I would suggest upgrading the trigger would help more than a better scope mount. FWIW I really like my Geissele SSA. Actually I've taken care of the trigger. It's a custom job that I'm taking to the range tomorrow to try out. The rifle in question is my 6.8 hunting rifle that I built. It's already wearing a Larue BC and I'm wanting to tweak it into being a superb piece of modern art. The rifle already shoots better than I do but I'm just worried that I'll waste money putting a Prostaff on a Larue mount. I don't want to put Pireilli's on a Jetta. |

This mount is rock solid and you will be very happy with it. Having the solid mount base will help to stabilize the glass to prevent it from jumping around during shooting. Also, something else to consider, if the scope will not be removed, is the VFZ (Vector Force Zero) option. It is just as solid of a platform, without the QD feature. Also, the mount will be about $50 cheaper. The mount can be taken off, but if you re-attach it to the weapon properly, it will also return to zero in the same manner as the QD mounts. Good luck. |
| Before I bought any LT mounts it was hard to wrap my head around the price of the mounts. Once I decided to take the plunge I haven't looked back. Any decent mount is expensive. When it comes down to it LaRue doesn't cost more than similar options that offer less. |

Old saying: Buy once, cry once - meaning go ahead and get the best instead of buying something you'll have to replace later (and lose even more money in the process).
Tough question - mount vs scope. But if you got the good scope first and had trouble, you wouldn't know if it was the scope or the mount. Like mentioned above, it would be easier to recoup money on an LT mount than on a used scope. FWIW, I've never tried one, but I'm hearing a lot of good talk about Vortex scopes. They're not a top level scope but they seem to offer a lot of features for reasonable prices. |

My hardcase for the rifle fits with the scope on. Is it a good idea to get the QD version anyway or just get the other version? I don't ever see myself needing a QD for this particular rifle but that's not to say that I won't years from now.
Of course I could just buy both when the time comes. |

That is going to depend on your needs. If you don't anticipate taking the scope off, get the VFZ mount and save some scratch. Get the new mount down the line when need fits the occasion. Both mounts are of top quality. |
