A friend of mine from work has the CTR on his AR.  It's stuck in the fully shortened position.  It worked fine for him for a week before it locked down.  There is maybe 1/16" between the front of the CTR and the castle nut.

Any trick to un sticking it?

dumb question, but the friction lock isn't engaged is it?

Nope.  Tried it in both positions just to be sure.  It's locked up tight in either.  Not even the slightest bit of play.  He said it moved smooth and easy at first.  If you squeeze the adjust lever the lock pops open.  I thought it might be a common issue but apparently not.

Unload weapon, stock on the ground, foot in CTR, grab by way of a VFG and give a sharp pull upwards.

Thanks.  Will try it.  Beats two guys playing tug of war with an AR at work.

or taking a Dremal tool down the top of the stock, and fileting it open.  That's what I was going to recommend.

Bent receiver extension is my guess.

ATI and  couple of other "Mil spec" receiver extensions have this problem all the time. They may be mil spec in length and diameter, but not where the leftover threads are exposed at the front of the tube. They don't turn these threads down to tube diameter and when you slide the stock forward it catches on these threads and is a bitch to get off. Easy way of removing stock is to hook or tie the center of the CTR / MOE to something solid, push adjustment lever (zip tie in compressed position) and yank on the rifle itself (being somewhat careful not to let the stock bottom out in its furthest open position). Now shitcan offending buffer tube, or use a wrap around buffer sling adapter to prevent stock from reaching threads.

Thanks.  That makes sense.  The stock is closed to the extent that the threads are inside it.  I never thought they would have a larger o.d. than the tube.  Maybe the tube is just soft and the threads aren't so much precision machined cuts but stomped out ruts.  We secured it by seat belt to try to extend it with no luck.  He is gonna take it in to the shop that installed it.  They sold him the stock and tube as well.

It was the tube.  The LGS didn't charge him for it so he's gotta pick one up.   I was surprised to see stuck it really was. Thanks for the replies.
