first AR, I'm used to AKs.

do I need to lube the bolt carrier or lube up any other parts before firing?

if so, what would be a good lubricant?

I would clean out the chamber at minimum.

And lube the shit out of it. AR's love to run wet. There are many lubricants that can be used, just pick what you feel is best. CLP, Hoppes, Rem Oil, etc, etc., I've even lubed w/ motor oil and it worked.

for most AR shooters, a can of Breakfree CLP works well.  The only time I use anything different is when I disassemble the BCG.  I soak those parts in a Hoppes #9 bath and they come out squeeky clean.

Of course, at minimum you should always clean the bore of any new gun.

yeah, that's kind of a "gimme." sorry I didn't say that I already know to clean any metal filings, the bore, chamber, etc. but I was trying to see if the AR had any trouble spots or anything for a first fire that isn't common to other guns. thanks!

should the entire bolt carrier be slick/shiny with lube? just the bolt? Shouldn't be any lube on the bolt face when I'm done, right?

I have CLP and Hoppe's solvent, and Hoppe's Oil at the moment. I've heard ARs like CLP, though. should I use the Hoppe's Oil on the bolt or just stick with CLP? thanks!

How can you have a new rifle, and possibly resist taking it completely apart an polishing and fondling every part?

I just use CLP because it seems to work for me and I have it around. Use whatever oil you like , the only ARs that I have seen problems with were dusty dry
and it still took several magazines before they started messing up
Chamber and bore should be more or less dry , I shoot with my bolt lugs , bolt, and carrier more or less wet.

On a factory new, tight gun things will possibly be a bit fussy unless you have it lubed up and full power 5.56 ammo. Cheap 223 may work but
it won't hurt anything, possibly a failure to feed or something

Have fun

I could swear I saw a post somewhere on here where PSA actually stated to completely clean all of the shipping grease off of the gun prior to use. Also, don't load 31 rounds in your 30 round PMag if you are running a PMag, I also recall a post from PSA stating it was the cause of a couple failures to feed. I'm not quoting them cause I can't find the post so take it with a grain of salt.

As far as lube, I coat everything that moves or rubs against anything that moves so I can see a sheen on everything. Good luck and have fun!

That can get you a felony charge in Ohio.    Sorry for the off-topic, but you touched a nerve.

Why? You're limited to 30 round magazines?

Yep.  31 rounds somehow turns a semi-auto into a machine gun in Ohio.
