An amazing piece of Colt and USMC M16/M4 carbine weapon history. A rare opportunity to own modern US military firearm development history. Fewer than 200 available to the public. I couldn't resist and got one.

From a purely mechanical sense, how are these different from a normal monolithic upper?  Just the heavy barrel and lower rail section (and heat sink in the IAR)?

I think you pretty much got it hollowpoint.

I would love to have one but I can't justify it right now.

My understanding is these should be used with an H3 buffer to prevent bolt bounce with the heavy profile barrel.

Any more details on the barrel (or a picture of one not installed)?  Guessing 1/7" but what's the profile...medium contour?

Where did you hear that about the H3 buffers?  I have been looking for evidence of this.  Source?

It's from Chris Bartocci. My understanding is he used to work for Colt.

Jaqfrost is correct. They had to use the H3 buffer to slow the rate of fire.

There might be some discussion in here: Colt LE6940 Discussion    The LE6940 and IAR6940 are obviously based on the same weapon.

Use of the H3 buffer is mentioned by Chris Bartocci in his article for Small Arms Review also.  Small Arms Review Article

We have a legitimate complete factory Colt IAR rifle and it came with an H3 buffer.

Shit; dust cover doesn't close...

Waaayyy too complicated to fix....two tiny one way gas tube retaining pin sized pins...that hold in the dust cover pin...yes...FUC&!

I went with the B5 stock because my beard doesn't get stuck in it. The Magpul grip has an extra bolt and firing pin for full auto logistics if needed.

It is good to see another owner. That is three of us now that I know of. Alex, you and myself. I can't wait to get home and get my weapon assembled.

Just for clarification sake.  These came with the Colt flip up integrated fsb, not the Knight's one as stated on AIM?

Might have been worth the price of admission if it actually came with the KAC Folding FSGB, not that it isn't/wasn't  at a great price point already.

Very cool piece for sure!

The uppers being advertised as 'prototype' is erroneous and creates some confusion for some. The color and configuration of the upper receivers for sale are the same IAR 6940 configuration as sold to Mexico which more than likely makes the contract overruns.

Chris Bartocci did a great article on the IAR which stated the actual prototype uppers were all FDE.

Yes I agree, I think they are Mexico overruns.

I'd been eyeing one of these as well since August to go along with my Colt LMG upper. Mr. Guns n Gear has one but IDK if he did a video review of it.
