Well...it happened to me today. Went shooting my M4, and round number 90 went downrange with my muzzle brake. 590 rounds total fired through it since new. What a bummer! Anyone have any idea how long it takes Colt to get these fixed?

There's a guy that works for Colt over on the 1911 Forums. He said things were pretty slow right now. Give Colt a call on the 800 number for information.
BTW, any idea what month/year your rifle was made. You can get some idea from the month/year printed on the plastic wrap sleeve. I have two recent Colts. One from March uses roll pins to hold on the break. The other from June uses solid pins. My guess is the hollow pins are the culprit. Do you recall what you had?

Sorry to hear about your brake.

According to the plastic sleeve my COlt M4 was built September 2003. My pins appear to be solid.

Do I have anything to worry about?

It is my understanding that the problem was corrected around March or April of this year. If the pins are solid on yours, and not standard roll pins, I would not worry about it. I was actually mistaken before...I purchased mine in Jan of this year, but it was produced Oct of 2002.

I am actually taking a little time to think about it. My local gunsmith can fix it for less than the shipping would cost to send it back to Colt. Kinda torn between keeping it original, all colt, or having the barrel threaded and adding a fake can...post ban permanently attached of course. Am in the process of building another rifle, and was headed in that direction with it. Decisions, decisions.

Does that SOGarmory brake come with a BATF letter?  There's one guy who is selling brakes that look awfully nice but says to hell with ATF testing.  It seems to me like he's letting his customers hang out.  The lesson is to make sure it's legal to install before putting your neck in a noose or wait until the ban (hoipefully) expires.

From SOG:

Post-Ban ATF Legal Birdcage Comp. Held on by 6 cup screws. Fits all .701 diameter barrels. Made in the USA. For best results it is recommended to insure screws are tightened securely as you would a car tire, by tightening opposing screws. It is further recommended the use of "loctite". Additionally, the barrel may be dimpled with a punch where the screws are to be secured.
