So, I've been having a hankering to pick up an older Colt lower - for some reason I like the old "Type 1" style A2 reinforcements and lighter anodizing better than the modern ones - must be the retro-head in me!
So, I'm thinking of getting an older Colt Match Target and re-building it. The Match Targets seem like a good option for me since the older Sporters are PreBan and tend to command that premium, while the Match Targets are post-ban, and tend to sell relatively cheaply since they don't have all the "desireable features," several hundred dollars less than similar vintage PreBans or "LE" models. Lucky for me, I have a Colt spare parts store that will make short work of post-ban components!
The more I think of it - the more sense it makes for me to get a factory Match Target and pull it apart - the MT6731 will provide me with an early M4 flattop upper - while an MT6530 will provide an upper that would find a home on my RO727 clone. The only wrinkle in this plan is the pivot pin dimension. I've got no problems milling out the sear block, nor the pivot pin spring channel and drain hole, but if the pivot pin is large pin, the whole scheme could de-rail. I know some of the "full fence" A2 lower Sporters were large pin and some were small pin (I have a small pin lower), but I'm not so sure about the Match Targets? "Logically" I would say the Match Targets weren't produced until after the Sporters, and if the last Sporters had milspec pivot pins, then all Match Target lowers should have small pins. However, we're talking about Colt... "logic" doesn't apply. On the Sporters, I generally go with "dual screw pivot pin - large pin / single screw pivot pin - small pin," but I never looked as closely at the Match Targets.
So... finally, my question is: Does anyone know if, or have a mid-90's Match Target lower with large pivot pins? Or can I just buy the first MT at the best price I see? Thanks, ~Augee |

I had a late 90's MT6601 that had the milspec sized (small) front pivot pin and a grey finish. Of course it came with the screw type pivot pin and not the true push pin.
I had recently put together a RO727 clone from a 6520 but had to let it go to support my new Ducati hobby. It was a very nice little carbine. Best Regards, |

I do not have a MT prefix rifle but it is my understanding that all MT prefix guns (post ban) came with the GI .250 pivot pin hole. Later ones w/o the steel sear block and a GI pivot pin as well. HTH I assume this since there are some prebans with milspec pins, but I just wanted to make sure - you never know with Colts.

I have not seen a "post ban" Colt that was large pivot pin.
Also, sometimes you can get lucky and get one of the early LEO guns; NOT LEO marked, but they are post ban. Best of all, they come with a factory, staked in carbine buffer tube. I have gotten a 6721 and 6520 like that. |

they are all small hole front augee just some didnt have it drilled for the normal pin, they came with screw heads or plain old milspec so dont worry about that I have a early mt6731 and a mt6601 the finish may not be as light as you are thinking Thanks! I'm actually expecting the early "charcoal gray," not as light as "Sporter" or "Preban" gray, and definitely not "XM gray," but the mid-late '90s dark gray - I have a couple of older M4/A1 uppers in this color - my R6601 lower is actually mated to an earlier "C AF" upper, and they are both distinct hues - and distinct again from the modern "flat black" color. Either way, both the old forging style and anodizing hue are really fringe benefits of my continuing quest to acquire the Colt AR parts - since I already have spare 14.5" barrels, BUIS, and stock assemblies, it's far less critical to get the "popular" models when a $900 Match Target will give me all the parts I was going to use anyways!
Don't worry, I'm still planning to pick up a brand new LE6920SOCOMII once I start drawing deployment pay again! ~Augee |

It was NOT LEO marked, but was not a "Preban".. Factory, 4 position buffer tube staked into place. Matched, dark grey "C AF" M4 marked upper.. Small pivot pin, no block. Perfect start for an early M4A1 clone. |
