What can you see with the D-300 with no IR illumination turned on? I have zero experience with any type of NV device so please be kind. From what has been written here it appears that the supplemental IR illuminator is mainly for identifying targets out past say 100 yards, and the built in IR is for close range and close quarters navigation. Is this correct?

That is correct. The built in IR illuminator effective range is approx. 25 yards in a very dark arena.  The D-300 will see a person walking at 200m with no issue.  The resolution of the person will not be near as clear as a Gen 3 device. Hope this helps and do not hesitate to ask any questions at any time!

So if I werer sitting in a deer stand three hours after the sun went down and there was no moon, just a clear sky, I could see that there was a hog under the feeder at 75 yards without using any IR illumination? I could distinguish that it was a hog and not a cow. And then I would turn on the illuminator to target the hog for a shot. Is that pretty much how it works? This is out in the open, not in the woods.

I do not think you could distinguish a hog from a cow in similiar size at 75 yards with a Gen 2 D-300.  With illumination, such as da torch I think yes.  The built in illuminator is only goof for 25 yards and in.  Da torch high power IR illuminator is a must for these units.  Thanks!
