I am looking for a good reliable defense round for the OBR. I have been following the many ammo-OBR threads on here, but everyone seems to be using different rounds for different purposes. Can anyone give any recommendations on rounds they have used with the OBR and how they performed.
Thanks! |

Hornady A-Max seems to be the best overall choice. I'm interested to see who has shot it out of an OBR as far as accurary is concerned. |

Is it considered self defense when they're a thousand yards off with nothing but a knife? ![]() Good question! I guess the appropriate answer would be that it depends how accurate they are with a knife from that distance.
I use Hornady BTHP. It came apart really well in the deer I shot.
168gr Match? Thanks for the replies. Please keep em coming |

But my guess is that for the OBR .308 HORNADY TAP AMMO 168 GRAIN T.A.P. would be a great def round to use. |

Heres a good read about TAP ammo.
TAP The Power Hope this helps. |

Call me crazy but it seems like even an FMJ 168gr bullet is going to cause someone hit with it, some serious issues. ![]() In a self defense situation....I'd be more worried about what else that FMJ is going to hit. This would be my concern as well. I am not as familiar with the characteristics of 7.62 as I am 5.56, so this is why I am looking for info on a solid all around defense round. As a secondary question - For those of you that have OBR's and have had them out to the range, what are you using to zero optics etc...? |

Good Call. I gotta ask myself (in a self defense situation) how do you see your self employing a 7.62 weapon. Seriously? Yeah, I see where you are going with that. The focus on the original question was not just for home defense as much as a good all around lethal round. With that said... the OBR is considered a battle rifle, light weight for a 7.62, and very versatile. Why not use it for CQB? |

To each his own. Plus, they are going to take your weapon as evidence until all is cleared up. Do you really want your OBR out of your possession for that long?
No kidding! You are correct, there probably are better options from 5-50, but even from 50 -100, it would be nice to have a good all around projectile. Like I said, the main reason for the post was to find a good all around defense round, as I believe the OBR is much more than a long range target rifle. |

YOU ASK AND YOU WILL RECEIVE. Here is a 5 shot group shot with Hornady Amax 168 grain. I have also seen a 5 shot group with 155grain Amax that was .485. They did not throw one like I did. Stats on the shots are: 16" OBR with Leupold MKIV 4.5-14 power scope Outdoors with a light wind. The last four shots were with in .310".
