Been thinkin' on this for a while, finally decided to give it a shot. I recently built a carbine using a BCM 14.5" midlength upper. I tried out a Magpul AFG because it looked like a good way to make the most use of a middy handguard without giving myself carpal tunnel. It worked pretty good, but I found it doesn't lend itself well to "tucking the elbows". MD's technique of getting the support elbow up is awesome when you're standing in one spot and quickly engaging multiple targets, but hold that position for more than a couple minutes and your rotator cuff cries out for Mommy. When shooting on the move or holding the rifle at the ready for extended periods, I find that tucking the elbows to the centerline works better for me.

So I got myself a pair of LaRue Handstops. Putting the stop on the side rail directly above the AFG allows me to wrap the fingers of my support hand farther around the AFG, and lock my thumb on top of the handstop instead of the top of the handguard, thus enabling me to tuck my elbows when I need to. I can still shift my hand and pop my elbow up to use the MD technique when appropriate. The stop also allows me to find my hand position more quickly.

Just another use for the product that I thought others might find useful. Sorry for the crappy cell pics; the Domestic Commander has the good camera at work.

On a side note, the Troy handguards required a slight modification to install the handstops. I guess the spacing on the slots is off enough that the stops will almost fit between the index clips, but not quite. Had to remove a bit of material from the ends of the stops with some 400 grit sandpaper, then they locked in fine.

"Ohhhh, you mean humanadocious." (name that movie)

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

I just dug up fingar's archived handstop mod tutorial. Think I may be bustin' out the mini-saw, precision files, & sandpaper and trimmin' those puppies down. While I like the ergonomics, the damn rifle looks like a hammerhead!
