In There's No Business Like Show Business, aye don't tend to watch Marilyn when MG is on screen, very different talent sets.
When they were casting South Pacific, the second to the last great Rogers and Hammerstein Years-Playing-On-Broadway titan to be filmed (after Oklahoma and The King And I, yet before The Sound Of Music), every star in Hollywood wanted the lead, from Judy Garland to Shirley Jones to Betty Hutton. Wait... the composers, studio, director and producer insisted everyone do a Screen Test. For the major proven musical stars (now legends), this was too much. Not for Mitzi. She did the screen test so perfectly, it was almost identical to that scene in the film. MM was very self-conscious of her limited acting range, took countless courses at The Actors Studio. Her 'talent' was the 'mindless blond' object du puddin', had a harsh short life. MG married Jack in the early 1950's, remained happy until his death in 2006, never remarried. She's alive and kicking at 92, the last of the top Studio Contract System stars from the Golden Age of musicals. Movie Factory specialists handled every aspect of the business, and their average product has proven better than most releases of the last 45 years. Below, Mitzi in the kitchen in one of her TV specials, each watched by 25,000,000 to 35,000,000 viewers, unthinkable today with 1000+ channels & www.
