So I originally sent this to my gunsmith to install, but he had it for three weeks and then left for vacation. Needless to say, I went to the gun shop he works out of and picked up my stuff to actually get my rifle going before I go on a little road trip.

Initially, the gunsmith said there was an issue with the barrel nut, and I needed a new one, which is what he was waiting on for three weeks I guess. I called DD and had one from them in 2days. When I picked up the rifle from the shop today,  a DD MFR nut was installed (unknown if this is the orginal or the one DD shipped to the gunsmith), and looks no different than the one DD mailed to me.

So, the DD MFR barrel nut is installed, and according to instruction, I just have to tighten the (4) set screws until I feel tension.

However, it seems the screws are so short, that I can place all of them in their hole and none of them touch the barrel nut, seem to even get close, or even seem to "catch" on anything . They just fall out.   What am I missing?

Those are not the set screws you tighten, the set screws are on an angle above that flat head cap screw.

Ah, thanks. I see what set screws are now.

Upon looking at This thread, I think they didn't give me back the set screws or that ring (mounting system?) on the inside that holds both the flat head screws and the set screws

Just called the shop, the gunsmith is on vacation and no one there can find the screws or ring.....super.

I would also ask your gunsmith why they didn't open the instruction sheet when they were installing the rail.  Nowhere in the instructions does it tell you to remove that ring from the tube (I have one on my SBR and have the instructions at my desk at work).

The other (much more rare) possibility is that your MFR missed an assembly step at DD and was packaged without the inner ring installed.  However, I HIGHLY doubt that happened.

Good luck to you.  Once you get all of the parts, the MFR is very easy to install.

Well, I'm starting to gather that the orginal issue may have been with that ring and not the barrel nut. When I called the gunsmith, he stated something was wrong and said it was the nut....but considering I had a nut shipped from DD that looks exactly like the nut that is on the rifle, I believe he may have meant that ring was out of spec (which may also explain why it was not returned to me). That ring had to have been on the rail orginally because those flat screws were secured to the rail when I recieved it.

I've put in a call to DD yesterday to see if I can just purchase that ring and the set screws, but I haven't heard anything back as of today. Guess I'll also have to see what my gunsmith has to say whenever he returns.....

Doh!  Your missing the barrel nut collar.  those flathead allen screws are what secure the collar to the MFR.  Then there are supposed to be 4 set screws that secure the collar to the barrel nut.  Give me a call if you or your gunsmith don't have those parts which should have been factory installed.
