I got my new PSA complete lower in today. It's the blemished model but looks great. However, there is a distinct rattling or knocking coming from the buffer tube what sounds like just behind the castle nut. It seems to be confined to that area. What might be moving around in that area causing that sound?

However, there is a distinct rattling or knocking coming from the buffer tube what sounds like just behind the castle nut. It seems to be confined to that area. What might be moving around in that area causing that sound? not that you should have to, but take it apart and see what you can find. |
There is a buffer and a buffer spring in the area you mention along with a detent and spring for the safety. Not sure what a damper is. You should be able to see the buffer if the upper is taken off the lower. You should also be able to see inside the buffer tube if you pull the buffer and spring out. If that fixes the rattle then you know what the noise is.
Upon even further inspection it appears something is sliding. I can tilt the lower forward here it move toward the castle nut then tilt it back and here it move back away. It doesn't go very far doesn't sound sound like. Sorry for the multiple posts but I figured the more information I could provide the better someone might recognize what could be going on.
There will be a little nipple in front of the buffer holding it in. You can push that down and pull out the buffer along with the spring. It really is that simple. Just don't let that nipple go flying. This should help you figure out what is going on inside that tube.
After reading through some of the archives on here it may be the buffer weights I am hearing. I saw a post describing the same thing that I am hearing and the poster said in that situation they were likely hearing the buffer weights sliding around. Will take a closer look at it this weekend. Unless the fish are biting...
Yes it is normal for you to feel and hear the weights move when you turn the buffer upside down. You could buy one of those enhanced buffers if you feel like spending the money for them. I believe they use sand or something, i'm not for sure, but they don't use weights like you have inside your buffer.
