I'm wanting to do my first build, 16" mid length. I want to put a quad rail on it. If I order the complete upper; from what I've read I will have to remove the front sight by tapping out the taper pins and then re-install or install a new gas block. Is this somewhat simple? I do have good mechanical skills, just never tried this before. Or should I buy the upper and barrel separately? If I do buy separately, will a head-space adjustment be needed or are they precise enough to just go together. That is something that I've also never done. Thanks

I just completed my first build.  I ordered a complete rifle kit, removed the handguard, fsb, and barell nut and mounted my free floating hand guard. All you need is a set of punches, a amorer's wrench and a tourque wrench.  It was easy to do.  Or you can buy a drop in and you only have to remove the handguard.  See the post in the build it yourself section.

There are a lot of quad rails out there that don't require removing the FSB. DD omega is a two piece free float. Then there are the Mid west gen2 , Kac and troy two piece rails. They go on with the with no gunsmithing. Another choice would be the mid west gen2 2-piece free float or centurian but you'll have to cut off the delta ring assembly. (very simple to do with dremel) There really are a lot of options with quad rails without removing FSB to install.. Im partial to mid west rails cause i believe they are the best value out there and thier gen-2 are slim and weigh as little as DD rails and rock solid.

Cool thanks, pretty much what I figured. I'll just order the complete upper and go from there. Thanks for the info!

I have had a PSA middy upper for awhile and been looking into switching to a ff rail with flip up sights f/r.  I did read that some people requested PSA install a low pro gas block instead of a front sight post, and PSA did at no added cost.  Not sure if they are still taking special orders like this since they are so busy.  But if they will do that, you won't have to worry about cutting down or removing the fsb and will just need to cut off delta ring and remove hand guard to install, depending on rail you choose.

If you are wanting to use a FF rail and leave your front sight post I'm pretty sure you can always take the barrel off of the upper reciever and install your FF rail from the other end....as long as it isn't longer than you stock handguards.

Can someone confirm this?

Pretty sure I saw a video where it was done, but it may not be able to be done with just any FF rail. I think the video I was watching was about a Sampson FF rail.

Yes, remove fs pins, slide fs and gas tube forward to muzzle, unscrew barrel nut, slide tube over barrel, install barrel nut, install tube, install fs and pins.

Good suggestion, I may try to install a ff that way. Thanks
