Ive been wondering for a while now where I had seen something like the AFG and I finally remember where. Years ago I remember watching a video diary from a Ranger in Afghanistan and he took his carry handle sight and mounted it upside down on his hand guard. I will try and find a picture but I'm 99% sure thats what it was. Is this the inspiration for the AFG. If so well done!

That's a pretty common thing, from back before flip up irons were as common.  It's simply a handy place to keep it in case your optics go down, and ensure you don't loose it when it comes time to turn stuff in.

Oh....I thought it came from the Ghost in the Shell rifle. Even though that is a cartoon...it was the first time I saw a curved handguard.

The FS2000 also has a curved handguard, but that's more...aesthetic than practical, I think.

I think the Ghost in the Shell thing was copied from the P90 anyway.

Which also has a curved handguard.

I guess what we're all saying is that the product may not be something completely new....but Magpul came at it from a different angle and now it's a domesticated product for any rail.
