My dad has an old colt AR15 in a1 configuration as far as I can tell. Fixed stock, slots in the flash hider goes all the way around, and we were trying to find out the manufacturing year, and all the serial numbers are 5 digits but the one we have is 6? If it helps the first 3 are SP146xxx. Any help?

You could not be more wrong. The serial prefix of all SP1s and Sporter IIs is SP, not SP1.

It's not - it's SP 146xxx.  Made in 1982 as noted above.

Colt only use SP1 on model numbers on the lower receivers.

With serial numbers prefix Colt mostly only use letters such as SP, GC, ST, CMH, MT, etc.
